In Houston, Cardinal Maradiaga is seen as a blessing; Friends say Houduran has traits to be Pope

Honduran Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga is a man some say could be the next pope.

But to Nicole Medina, he is also family — an "uncle," willing to take time out of a busy schedule to offer the Houston college student advice over the phone and help her younger brother work out a difficult passage on the saxophone.

Reuters Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga of Honduras has family, church and academic connections in Houston. . To Houston lawyer Terence O'Rourke, the cardinal is a colleague in the fight against the death penalty. He's also a friend who is not above sharing a good St. Peter-at-the-Pearly-Gates joke.

Rodriguez is very much a Latin American cardinal dedicated to the concerns of the region, and in particular his native Honduras.

But in Houston, he is more than a frequent guest with family, church and academic ties to the University of St. Thomas' Center for International Studies. Houstonians who know him say he has touched their lives with his intelligence, knowledge, charisma and warmth.

Some think he would make an excellent pope.

"If I'm jealous, I would say no," said Medina, a junior at the University of St. Thomas whose mother is the cardinal's second cousin. "That would mean I wouldn't be able to see him as much as I see him now.

"But the world needs him more than I need him," she added. "That is why I should say yes, it would be a great thing. I know he would help the world incredibly."

Those who know Rodriguez say he would focus on what the cardinal has referred to as "weapons of mass destruction" — poverty, social injustice and political corruption.

I've had my Vatican antennae up and ain't heard anything about Cardinal Maradiaga - I'm guessing age may be a factor in election of the pope, too.

I'm wondering if concerns about Liberation Theology might hurt a Central American, more so than a South American candidate?

In Houston, he has been seen in sweats and a T-shirt returning from Bally Total Fitness in Rice Village.

Great just what we need... a Pope who puts himself in the company of women in their jogbra's. Modernism is great isn't it?

Sorry, but the Cardinal sounds like either a first-class idiot, or someone with a personality disorder. Comparing media criticism of pedastery to Naziism? Idiot. Calling poverty a WEAPON of mass destruction? Idiot.

>> At Medina's quinceañera (15th birthday celebration), he performed songs on the saxophone. <<

I'm really starting to dislike politicians (and this idiot is a politician) who dabble in saxophobes.

He is credited with having sidelined Liberation Theology in Honduras. BUt if he calls povert a WEAPON of Mass Destruction, he quite plainly is afflicted with LT-style thought processes.

I hadn't taken the reference literally at first. I was thinking of Wujak Carol.

"he quite plainly is afflicted with LT-style"

yeah, it would seem so. kind of a silly thing to have on a shirt, especially if one is a cardinal

social justice is great, but i guess i'm more concerned about understanding where our next pope is regarding spiritual teachings.

in fact, i'm hoping things stay as they are in this regard - actually dogma, by definition - can not change

Yeah, pretty scandalous. Can't have a cardinal exercising, or being anywhere around women.

Your complaint is silly.

Nothing wrong with focusing on physical and spiritual exercises.

Are you looking for a pope or a buddy? We need Pius X not Richard Simmons.

You make Pius X out to be some kind of ogre. He talked and talked against modernism, which just drove it underground. He didn't actually punish many people, but he did relax the rules surrounding the Eucharist so that more people could receive.

That's a good thing.
