"Also, had never heard him referred to as First among Saints of the Church."

I sometimes feel bad because it seems like he tends to get short shrift these days. I can't remember hearing a homily on Saint Joseph.

I believe his intercession is powerful, though. Named my second-to-youngest child after him.

As an aside, two wonderful paintings taking Saint Joseph as their subect are Crespi's "The Death of Saint Joseph" and "The Dream of Saint Joseph" by De la Tour.

Furthermore, Saint Joseph's primary title is Patron (Father) of the Universal Church. His is first place among the saints.

Nothing against St. Joseph, but traditionally, the Virgin is the first among the saints, followed by St. John the Baptist. And only then St. Joseph.

Thanks for the tip on the paintings. I'll check those out tomorrow at work. My home computer boots me out of google and other searches. Need a new one, I guess.

Anyway, I agree about St. Joseph being seemingly forgotten. How sad that is!

I think the state of manhood within the Church and Society is in peril. And I think that part of the reason all manner of dissent has beset the Church, is because of the vacuum this absence of true manliness has created. I hope the trend begins to be reversed.

Of course, the author meant other than Our Lady.

I have the Saint Benedict medal on the last decade of my rosary. The first decade is marked by the Miraculous medal. I am fascinated by the history of both. Thanks for posting this. I have the insert in a prayer book but not in the gorgeous colors shown here.

No doubt about it, the final all out battle of good and evil has been joined. Choose your side folks. There will be no middle ground in the end.

I can't recall from memory the source right now but I recently read that toward the end of time, the devotion to St. Joseph will be rekindled. I think it was a writing of St. Catherine, Doctor of the Church.

The Saint Benedict Medal, perhaps the most popular Catholic medal after the Miraculous Medal of the Immaculate Conception, is considered lead-pipe-lock insurance against the forces of evil for those who wear it.

Wow!

And believe it or not, there are protestants who consider Roman Catholics to be superstitious!

Just kidding.

Congratulations on you new Pope. He is truly a Holy man, and may God bless his time on Peter's throne.

The symbolism of the name "Benedict" is so many-layered I think we're all on the brink of vertigo.

Yes, a great name. A venerable name that breaks away from the VII names of John and Paul, with a monastic connotation. Vertigo is a good word. I've been dizzy with joy all day. Deo Gratias.

"My home computer boots me out of google and other searches."

Eh? Not following that one. You mean it crashes?

"Need a new one, I guess."

Maybe, or perhaps it's just that your hard disk needs some housecleaning. Perhaps a new video card or some additional RAM would get you by for another year or two.

[a] lead-pipe-lock insurance against the forces of evil

Ecclesiastical terminology hits a new low, and somewhere a theologian must be spinning ultrasonically in his grave.

LOL! This is certanly written in a "populist" tongue.

That said, let me quote from the appendix to TAN Book's edition of "The Life of St. Benedict," by Pope St. Gregory the Great.

Let us state here that we do not ascribe any unknown or hidden power to the [St. Benedict] Medal, a power which the superstitious ascribe to their charms. We know wherin its power lies, and we protest that the graces and favors are due, not to the gold or the silver, the brass or aluminum of the Medal, but to our faith in the merits of Christ crucified, to the efficacious prayers of holy Father St. Benedict, and to the blessings which the holy Church bestows upon the Medal and upon those who wear it. The Medal excludes every power or influence which is not from above.

I can't remember hearing a homily on Saint Joseph.

Oh, I can! Granted, it was many years ago, but that particular sermon has stuck with me for all this time. I'll never forget it: It was the Feast of the Holy Family, and Father blew me away with his homily on the stunning loyalty of St. Joseph as a father and protector. Even mentioned St. Joseph as the "Terror of Demons."

Fabulous sermon. I wish all of you could have heard it.

Regards,

Just remember .....

"The value and power of the Medal must be ascribed to the merits of Christ Crucified, to the efficacious prayers of St. Benedict, to the blessing of the Church, and specially to the faith and holy disposition of the person using the Medal. "

(read my new tagline)

I have a beautiful Saint Benedict Crucifix. I've had it for years. My brother has one as well. I hope to be wearing on the day I die.
