I would suggest that during that time, Catholic church leaders were not open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit. I emphazize the point in response to several comments made by a Catholic, that the election of the pope is not guided by the Holy Spirit, otherwise certain popes during that time would not have been elected. I believe that poster's argument is flawed.
