What about the believers who were tortured and thrown to lions or hid in caves and holes in the ground, hiding from those who persecuted them? What about those who were sawn in two, and imprisoned because of their faith and refusal to deny the Christ who indwelled them?
Believers of the first few centuries, contrary to how "holy" you may think your life is, completely understood what it meant to be a disciple of Christ. They knew what it meant to "die daily." We have no understanding of those words.
So, please, compare your great "blessings" that you claim to have because "God is for you" and forget what the writer of Hebrews said about those who denied themselves to the point of death, that "the world was not worthy of them."
Can the same be said about you or I?
We all have tribulations, however, not everyone is going to have his body cut in half with a saw. Do you realize that? Geez, everyone that quotes those verses from Hebrews to attack fellow believers, should move to Iran and preach, and you'll get your wish...
The examples of past Christian steadfastness in the face of persecution are good ones. However, August 11, 2005, is a day of persecution for Christians in the Sudan, Ethiopia, and for those being beaten savagely in Chinese jails. They are the newest martyrs for the faith, and they make our faith seem very flabby indeed. But our time will come for persecution as well. Woe be to us if we think the way to Heaven is broad and easy, as Jesus warned (Matt. 7:13-23). That easy way leads to Hell and many there are that are being deceived by Satan into following this pernicious feel-good "success theology." Jesus wants us to be diligently strengthening ourselves in His Word so we can withstand the fiery darts of the Devil when our time of suffering and self-denial comes. "Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life," He promises (Rev. 2:10).
