Amazing how authoritarian some bishops can be when they choose. Usually, they're out to lunch.

I seem to recall Loverde's name cropping up in relation to the priestly sex scandals also. If memory serves, he suspended a whistleblower who outed one or more miscreants. Fr. Haley, if memory serves.

Marshmallow,

You're correct in what you recall. Fr. Haley is the one Loverde suspended for pointing stuff out. I'm in the Diocese of Arlington, VA, and Loverde is the bishop. I've heard things for quite some time about him from friends who've been Catholic longer than me. Apparently, since most priests in the diocese are solid and orthodox, Loverde can't do all the damage he'd like. A while back, Loverde was apparently going to implement some things that weren't exactly kosher, and my pastor (who is the senior priest in my diocese) was ready to debate Loverde in a public forum about why he shouldn't implement those things. Apparently Loverde backed down. Fr. O'Brien is two years from retirement, whereas Loverde just turned 65, so I guess he figured he'd wait. Plus, Fr. O'Brien's knowledge of Aquinas and his debating ability are well known, and he is very popular; likely Loverde also knew Fr. O'Brien would have wiped the floor with Loverde in any debate.
