I am searching many different religions, and reading my Bible, and trying to see if there is out there, a particular religion which in my heart, rings out loud and clear that it might just be the religion which holds the truth...its a long and often daunting task, but a task well worthwhile...

Bring this in sincere prayer to our Lord. He wants what is best for you and will guide you without fail. It worked for me. I will add you to my prayer list.

thanks for this article, and for your informative posts

You are most welcome!

We better not celebrate/worship Thanksgiving this year. Merely saying "what a beautiful bird!" will turn the dinner into a pagan worship of a roasted bird.

Since you've gone and dragged me into it again:

John 12:

1Six days before the Passover, Jesus arrived at Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. 3Then Mary took about a pint[a] of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

4But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, 5"Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages.[b]" 6He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.

7"Leave her alone," Jesus replied. " It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. 8You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me."

Maybe it's just me, but iconoclasts always remind me of Judas Iscariot.

Yea, he was probably talking about little ol me.

"Your screenname should be PretentiusMaximus."

I'm trying to parse your second line.

I'm not succeeding.

It reads like you think I've claimed to be a marble cherubim.

I know that can't possibly be what you mean.

"It's called "setting the record straight".

We've had enough (and more than enough) of protestant-written history (and worse, communist written history), in which the Catholic Church is made the villain in any and every way conceivable."

I know you have been on the receiving end of this stuff for centuries and I also know that we'd be getting it too if the people in the West who are attacking you even noticed us. In fact, we'd probably get it worse. In a sense, you're situation in the West has acted as a shield for us over the past 100 years or so that we've been here in any numbers. We, on the other hand, have been dealing with the Mohammadens for 1400 years and have despite that maintained the Faith we all once shared.

I personally don't give a damn what the Protestants think of us or even what they say about us Orthodox or Latins. I do care intensely what Roman Catholics believe about their own Church because that will influence the way they feel about Holy Orthodoxy. +JPII and +Bartholmeus have both said that we, the laity, should enter into a dialog so we can better understand each other. Reinforcing triumphalistic revisionist notions of the history of The Church in the minds of the Faithful does not further that end. Indeed it thwarts it.

One of you reminded me that its not always about me. Believe me, I know that. But when it comes to demonstrating the history of The Church, we should all remember that, as +BXVI has pointed out, the Latin Church is a particular Church within The Church, one which, in a united Church would hold a place of primacy but not the only Church. When it comes to the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church, its about US, not just Rome!

I was just about to post this parable, in relation to SoothingDave's 74.

There are two parables where Jesus directly speaks of the use of one's best in Christian worship. One is the use of expensive oils, which you posted. The other is condemnation of the wedding guest not wearing clothes appropriate for the wedding feast.

Yet Luther complained about the expense of the Basilica of St. Peter in his theses, virtually repeating Judas's line. With all his sola scriptura, the man was not very familiar with the Gospel, was he?

Touch ArrogantBustard's marble cherubim and your in league with the devil!

You'll know them by their fruits ... busting up marble cherubim puts you in some fairly unsavoury company. The original iconoclasts (who were in Greece, hence the name) denied the reality of the incarnation. Even you would consider them heretics. Henry VIII (and his even more violent followers and successors) despoiled Catholic churches, monasteries, etc. for personal gain. The French Revolutionaries were notorious for destroying Christian art in an attempt at cultural 'cleansing'.

Really? They remind me more of Aaron grinding up the golden calf.

Personally I think it would be morally reprehensible to destroy any property that was not your own.

You may not agree with how someone worships, but you should leave them in peace to follow the dictates of their concsience.

So, personally, you'd agree that the English "reformation" was an exercise in theft, vandalism, thuggery, and murder?

I would not paint with that broad a brush. Undoubtedly there were excesses - as there were at, say, the sacking of Constantinople.
