Indeed. My parents are both converts to the Faith. My dad’s dad was a Presbyterian Minister, and my mom’s parents were fundamentalists in their background. My dad once told me that for him it was an intellectual thing. In so many words, he read himself into the Church. My mom has told me that she was drawn to the Church from when she was a little girl, and that my grandmother, bless her, wore black when she became a Catholic. She misunderstood, but was still there for her youngest daughter.

They’re still devout Catholics, who raised four boys and who just celebrated their fiftieth anniversary last month. (huzzah!)

As to the latter group you mentioned, one of my favorite Biblical exegetes is Dr. Robert Sungenis, who left the Church at nineteen to become a protestant, and a renowned Biblical scholar, and read himself right back into the One True Faith. Whether a person is Catholic or protestant, you could do a lot worse than his kind of Biblical expertise.

Sounds sort of like my own story. My mom’s parents were “Holy Roller” Old-Line Pentecostal when my mom was small. My dad’s people were from polygamist Mormons from their community in Mexico. Mom converted to Catholicism for her first marriage, then to LDS for her marriage to my dad. I was born and raised in the LDS church, but my mom went back to the Catholic Church, and took us kids with her when I was about 13. I believe to this day that my mother saved my soul. Thanks agan, Mother!
