This is the crux of not only this argument, but many others. The entire idea of sacrifice bringing a person closer to God has been thrown out wholesale by a good many modernists. It goes against human nature, but God's call usually does. Protestant theologian H. Richard Niebuhr describing the creed of liberal Protestantism in an earlier American generation:
A God without wrath brought men without sin into a kingdom without judgment through the ministrations of a Christ without a cross.
