I think Kilgore Trout (Philip Farmer) said it best in "Venus on the Half Shell" when he opined, via Bingo the giant cockroach, that God went out for a beer sometime around 4 billion years ago and forgot to come back.
(and by the way...."Venus..." is the very funny but sick sci fi novel that "Hitchikers Guide" was so blatantly stolen from.)
