Catholic Devotion: Pray the Rosary for the Souls at Risk (The Da Vinci Code)
myself | 5/10/2006 | Pyro7480

Posted on 05/10/2006 5:22:21 PM PDT by Pyro7480

Here's something that all Catholics can do in the days before the the release of the Da Vinci Code movie. Pray the Rosary, with the intention that all those who are thinking about seeing the movie avoid doing so, so their souls may not be put at risk. If you say the Rosary daily, add this intention to those that you already have. If you can, pray the Rosary every day, during the nine days left before the release of the movie. Continue to pray the Rosary during the run of the movie in the theaters.

No matter what you think what should be done in response to the movie, this is a powerful action we can all take.

Please reflect on the words of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen.

It is objected that there is much repetition in the Rosary inasmuch as the Lord’s Prayer and the Hail Mary are said so often: therefore it is monotonous. That reminds me of a woman who came to see me one evening after instructions. She said, “I would never become a Catholic. You say the same words in the Rosary over and over again, and anyone who repeats the same words is never sincere. I would never believe anyone who repeated his words, and neither would God.” I asked her who the man was with her. She said he was her fiancé. I asked: “Does he love you?” “Certainly, he does.” “But how do you know?” “He told me.” “What did he say?” “He said: ‘I love you.” “When did he tell you last?” “About an hour ago.” “Did he tell you before?” “Yes, last night.” “What did he say?” “I love you.” “But never before?” “He tells me every night.” I said: “Do not believe him. He is repeating; he is not sincere.”

The beautiful truth is that there is no repetition in “I love you.” Because there is a new moment of time, another point in space, the words do not mean the same as they did at another time or space. A Mother says to her son: “You are a good boy.” She may have said it ten thousand times before, but each time it means something different; the whole personality goes out to it anew, as a new historical circumstance summons forth a new outburst of affection. Love is never monotonous in the uniformity of its expression. The mind is infinitely variable in its language, but the heart is not. The heart of a man, in the face of the woman he loves, is too poor to translate the infinity of his affection into a different word. So the heart takes one expression, “I love you”, and in saying it over and over again, it never repeats. . . .(emphasis added)

That is what we do when we say the Rosary – we are saying to God, the Trinity, to the Incarnate Savior, to the Blessed Mother: “I love you, I love you, I love you.” Each time it means something different because, at each decade, our mind is moving to a new demonstration of the Savior’s love: for example, from the mystery of His Love that willed to become one of us in His Incarnation, to the other mystery of love when He suffered for us, and on to the other mystery of His love when He intercedes for us before the Heavenly Father.

Fulton J. Sheen, The World's First Love pp. 207-208

According to freeper Sandyeggo, her pastor at St. Ephrem's Maronite Catholic Church, Fr. Nabil, believes that many souls will be lost as a result of this book. Thank you, Pyro, for an excellent suggestion. Our Blessed Mother hears our prayers and intercedes with her Son.

According to Reductio, whose baby was baptised by this same Fr. Nabil mere weeks ago, would claim that Fr. Nabil would without a doubt state that many souls will be saved by the effects of the recitation of the Holy Rosary; there is much to hope for, so thank you for an excellent suggestion Pyro and God bless Fr. Nabil, a most excellent Maronite priest.

Great idea.

The stupid movie won't have an effect on fervent souls, but those who are wavering in their faith will be effected.

As a former Catholic teacher, I am stunned that there are Catholic teachers out there promoting this book.

They are obviously oblivious to what the church is truly all about.

These people seem to be lost souls. Unbelievable.

And to give it as gifts to students really shows that they are in absolute ignorance of the Church and her history. These people need to go back to school.

They do need our prayers, and perhaps a rosary as well.

In the Garden at Gethsemane, when Jesus repeatedly prayed the same prayer, was He giving a bad example?

There's a lot he can't grasp. I once made it onto the air duirng his national radion broadcast and I countered his statement that Christian Doctrine about Contraception wasn't binding.

I explained to him why it was and he hung-up and me and told his audience I was a "bomb-thrower"

Do you belong to a church and does that church have prayers during their service?

BTW< I don't agree that prayer is a privtae thing. Prayer is both public and and private. The Earliest Christians understood it correctly. As The Didache notes

Chapter 14. Christian Assembly on the Lord's Day. But every Lord's day gather yourselves together, and break bread, and give thanksgiving after having confessed your transgressions, that your sacrifice may be pure. But let no one who is at odds with his fellow come together with you, until they be reconciled, that your sacrifice may not be profaned. For this is that which was spoken by the Lord: "In every place and time offer to me a pure sacrifice; for I am a great King, says the Lord, and my name is wonderful among the nations."

*I am sure you belong to a church that does as our Lord commanded, no?Acts 14 All these were persevering with one mind in prayer with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren

Acts 41 They therefore that received his word, were baptized; and there were added in that day about three thousand souls. 42 And they were persevering in the doctrine of the apostles, and in the communication of the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 And fear came upon every soul: many wonders also and signs were done by the apostles in Jerusalem, and there was great fear in all. 44 And all they that believed, were together, and had all things common. 45 Their possessions and goods they sold, and divided them to all, according as every one had need. 46 And continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they took their meat with gladness and simplicity of heart; 47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord increased daily together such as should be saved

Acts And the days being expired, departing we went forward, they all bringing us on our way, with their wives and children, till we were out of the city: and we kneeled down on the shore, and we prayed.

1 Tim I will therefore that men pray in every place, lifting up pure hands, without anger and contention.

*Time to read all of the New Testament, brother :)

My intent is not to offend; but this seems counter to the instruction given in Matthew, in that it is a repetition, and not a soul-searching request to God.

Jay, do you have a link of what you sent me this morning from Bishop Sheen?

He has a beautiful way of stating it.

I do not understand the Rosary portion.

Good. This sentence is the only meaningful part of your post. Admitting that you have a problem is always the first step in rectifying the problem.

The Rosary is not "repetition". It is a meditation on (some of) the significant events in the life of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Rather than persisting in your admitted lack of understanding, I suggest a bit of research on what the Rosary really is. Start here

If, after you clear up your lack of understanding, the Rosary still doesn't appeal to you, fine. There are myriad forms of prayer; no doubt you will find one which deepens your relationship with The Lord, and guides you on your path to sanctification.

I suppose you think that Jesus' repetitive prayer during His agony in the Garden of Gethsemani was vain repetition.

"And going a little further, he fell upon his face, praying, and saying: My Father, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from me. Nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. And he cometh to his disciples, and findeth them asleep, and he saith to Peter: What? Could you not watch one hour with me? Watch ye, and pray that ye enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh weak. Again the second time, he went and prayed, saying: My Father, if this chalice may not pass away, but I must drink it, thy will be done. And he cometh again and findeth them sleeping: for their eyes were heavy. And leaving them, he went again: and he prayed the third time, saying the selfsame word." Matthew 26:39-44

That entire section of Matthew is among my favorites. When Jesus is speaking about charity, prayer, etc he speaks about being modest and discrete. Imagine such an issue so important to God that Jesus addresses the issue. I so enjoy this part of the new testament.
