We really need to demand accountability from clergy.

Bingo. But those that have swallowed the Purpose Driven Church/Life koolaid have already inoculated themselves against questioning their leadership.

Anyone who wants to know how demanding accountability from leadership is handled in a purpose driven church should read Chuck MCalister's six part series on "Transitioning an established church" on pastors.com. Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Part 4
Part 5
Part 6

It's abominable. (especially concentrate on Part 5 and how to get away from using Robert's Rules of Order and grab power) And they're apparently unashamed of it.

Also read "Transitioning" by Dan Southerland, which contains a GREAT AND GLOWING foreword/endorsement by Rick Warren himself.

And then there's the story summarizing months of research by Suzanne Sataline in the Wall Street Journal on Sept 5, 2006 http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06248/719178-84.stm

the stories of many who demanded accountability and were summarily ousted from their churches for their trouble. Transitioning is put out by "Church Transitions, Inc" which is also referenced in the above two articles and seems rather proud of their draconian style.

...which is why i'm in a denomination where the ministers are accountable for their teaching. While in the polity of my denomination it is not possible for a congregation to remove a minister, the Presbytery (a court of the minister's peers) can, and often does. That's one of the reasons i'm a Presbyterian, and not an independent.

That can't happen in a denominational structure. At the congregational level, the by-laws mandate the use of Robert's Rules of Order. The moderator of a meeting has no other option, and rules cannot be suspended without a majourity vote of the congregation. Still, any decision can be reversed by the Presbytery and/or General Assembly.

i can assure you that in my denomination, that organisation would be thrown out on it's ear, and forbidden to return to a particular congregation on pain of legal action if necessary.

A Presbyterian form of government is a much tougher nut to crack than is a congregational form.
