Denver Archdiocese Reacts To ICE Raid
The Denver Channel ^ | December 13, 2006

Posted on 12/14/2006 7:01:59 AM PST by Alex Murphy

DENVER -- "The mass arrest of unauthorized workers in Colorado and across the country this week once again puts a human face on the flaws in our immigration system; a system that needs immediate and very serious reform.

As I’ve said many times in the past, the Church supports the law. She supports our nation’s right to regulate immigration and secure our borders for the common good of all citizens. We also deeply respect the men and women who have the task of enforcing the law in difficult circumstances.

But as Catholics, we also need to vigorously question the timing, manner and focus of these latest arrests. Staged on the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe and barely two weeks before Christmas, these raids have disrupted hundreds of families in the immigrant community and frightened many thousands more. And while public officials have explained the reason for these raids as criminal identity theft, most of the real criminals – the people who steal and sell the false identities so that undocumented immigrants can find work – were not among those arrested.

Dramatic, get-tough arrests of more and more average workers will not solve our immigration crisis. In fact, such actions often engender more confusion and bitterness, and they don’t strike at the root of the real issue: an immigration system that seems disconnected from the human and business realities of the American economy.

As we enter the last few days before Christmas, we urgently pray that God will grant our law enforcement authorities prudence, justice and restraint in carrying out their duties, and that members of Congress will act rapidly and with courage in fixing an immigration system that has clearly failed. Above all, we need to pray for the children and spouses of those persons who were arrested and face deportation at this sacred time of year.”

Oh My God, now we've frightened thousands of illegals!
Oh the shame and remorse and guilt!
Let us pray that we find millions of the buggers, quaking
in their boots, and deport them right on Christmas day,
screaming children sick old people and all!

The local news (I watch 4 in Denver) has consistently included with this story on the illegals, stories about identify theft. For the first time, I really see the tide turning on this one. Sure, its a bummer seeing the signs about wanting my daddy back for Christmas, but its also a bummer to have your identity stolen and have to spend YEARS trying to right your credit, your SS, your unemployment, your drivers record, your tax payments.....

There really is a cost to turning a blind eye toward our porous Southern border. Love him or hate him, but Tom Tancredo is right on the money with that issue.

Whatever agent scheduled the raid for the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe was a fool. The timing strains an already tense situation, giving reporters and activists ready-made sentimental imagery.

Would anyone with a brain raid the Irish illegals back east on St. Patrick's Day?

Sounds like a good time to grab the illegal criminals.

Now they need to go grab their wives, the illegal ones.

When these priests and bishops suddenly find they owe tens of thousands of dollars in back taxes because a bunch of illegals stole their social security numbers, I bet they will change their minds. Those rounded up weren't just here illegally, they were committing fraud - a felony - and something that will bar them from ever immigrating legally to this country. In other words, if amnesty for these people passes, they will be the only people to immigrate legally to the U.S. and be criminals. That's not the type of people that should be welcome here - felons! And in 5 yers, they would get voting rights!

I read a report where some Swift workers were not at work because of the holy day! Others who decided the buck was more important than their religion go swept up in the raid.

What is a person to do these days?

If the illegals don't like it, they can always go home!

The government has show more than enough restraint. As for the timing, it may have been more effective because no one expected it at this time.

"You're nicer than I am. Seeing that just makes me laugh."

There is part of me that does that math and says "Hey...you got to pick the day and hour you illegally entered this country, others will choose when you leave."

But, I have 5 kids and not being there for Christmas would be tough....which is why I don't sneak into Mexico with my kids!

No they haven't. Immigrants are people here legally, and have no need to steal the identities of American citizens. They almost certainly hold their green cards jealously and aren't in jeopardy at all of being arrested for such violations.

Only aliens in the country illegally have this fear and disruption in their lives. And they should! It's a risk they accepted. And for them to go further and brazenly steal other people's identities simply shows the depth of their indifference and contempt for U.S. laws.

Nauseating that the Catholic Church - an entity that the United States was founded in defiance of - would stoop to playing these games and try to garner sympathy for this "community" of criminals who routinely smirk and laugh at the "gringo laws".

Guess the laughing and smirking dies down when the law shows up.

Americans should move into his church and refuse to leave. See how much "restraint" he'd call for then.
