Half a Savior
Reformed.org ^ | George Whitefield

"...(Y)ou may value yourselves as fine rational creatures, and that you are noble beings; and you were so, as you first came out of God's hands; but now you are fallen, there is nothing lovely, nothing desirable in man; his heart is a sink of pollution, full of sin and uncleanness: Yet, though a man's own heart is so desperately wicked, he is told by our modern polite preachers, that there is a fitness in men, and that God seeing you a good creature, gives you his grace; but this, though it is a modern, polite, and fashionable way of talking, is very unscriptural; it is very contrary to the doctrines of the Reformation, ....

...yet our pulpits ring of nothing more, than doing no one any harm, living honestly, loving your neighbor as yourselves, and do what you can, and then Christ is to make up the deficiency: this is making Christ to be half a savior, and man the other part; but I say, Christ will be your whole righteousness, your whole wisdom, your whole sanctification, or else he will never be your whole redemption.

Here's a direct link to the sermon: Christ the Support of the Tempted (sermon 19).

No problem. The site is using html frames which tends to hide the direct URL to the article it displays. Hardly anybody uses frames these days...

My memory says that I used the exact url that was on the page from which I took the excerpt.

Yet, after your post, I clicked the link that I posted, and it only took me to the page with a list of sermons. (From which I took the one that included the excerpt.)

That's frames for you. One way to find the direct URL to articles when the site is using frames is to right click the link (in this case sermon 19) and open the article up in a new window. I figured the site was using frames when I first saw the scroll bar on the left. You can also view the source. Other than that, when frames are used you'll always get the impression you're posting the exact URL when you're not...

Thanks for the excellent sermon by Whitefield, x.

I really enjoy reading the preaching of these great pastors. Imagine sitting in the pews listening to them in person. Think how humbled and encouraged and strengthened the congregation must have been by the end of the service.

CRTA is a wonderful site.
