Proverbs 5:15-23 (Sex and Wisdom, Male and Female)

Proverbs 5:15-23

INTRODUCTION
Sex and wisdom are closely intertwined in the OT. Wisdom and Folly are both pictured throughout the early chapters of Proverbs as women – one honorable and blessed, the other seductive and ultimately deadly. Further, the Song of Songs is included among the wisdom books. In some way, skill in living and skill in love-making are connected.

BASIC PERSPECTIVES
Sex is a mystery. Sex is a mystery because masculinity and femininity are elusive qualities. Sexual desire is a mystery, so spontaneous and powerful that we might almost forgive ancient pagans for thinking of sex as a goddess, a divine power. Sexual intercourse is a mystery of mutual indwelling that points to the mutual indwelling of the persons of the Trinity. In what follows, I don't pretend to unravel the mystery of sex; I only intend to examine a few of its dimensions.

Sheer beauty indeed. Excellent post. Thank You!

This will come in handy in raising my 12 yr old son and 13 yr old freshly adopted, sexually abused daughter. It puts sex in its proper context, something the church has failed to do for years.

I'm bookmarking this for later --- sounds fascinating. I'll read it carefully after I come home from Mass!

It is sheer beauty, isn't it?

Goodspeed with your 'freshly adopted, sexually abused daughter', and if you wouldn't mind a little 'sharing' from someone who has been in your daughter's shoes, I'd just like to say this, a kid who has been molested or sexualized at a very early age has a couple of crosses to bear.

The first, and maybe the longest lasting is how being sexualized early distorts a kid's vision. Like an astigmatism, it bends your view towards all things sexual. It becomes a focus because it awakens a consciousness in you that should have been allowed to awaken on its own, organically, and so you become aware much too early of a drive that is as vital as eating but as dangerous as fire, and it becomes a secret drive, a thing you must keep to yourself, because who will understand or believe you or it?

You begin to view many things through that new awakening, that new sexual prism, that should never have been, but you have no tools with which to deal with this abnormality: sarcasm is expressed using the language of sex, anger is expressed using the language of sex, it can become a rhizome, which a person might never get at the root of if they have no family or loved ones to turn to.

My first incident occurred when I was 10, the second when I was 12, and the third and last when I was 19. I'll be 51 in March, and as you can see, I still want to talk of it because the first two incidents I kept to myself for 38 years, and by the time the last one occurred, which I did tell my Mom about, it had almost no impact on me because it had acquired its own nature.

You've done a marvelous thing by adopting this girl and giving her a shot at family. Blessings of love and good health to you and your daughter.
