That has nothing to do with it. He did not need to go to Rome. The Catholic Church has existed since the beginning, historically. "to become deep in history is to become Catholic".

And of course, there's no such thing as the "Roman Catholic Church". There's the Catholic (One, Holy, and Apostolic) Church, which just happens to have it's seat in Rome. All Catholics (Melkite, Maronite, Ukrainian, etc.) are subject to the Pope.
