I think you have to be related to the person you get baptized for. That's why they do all the geneological research.

That point isn't entirely rational either. Since the Mormons believe in the Noah story, they have to believe that everyone is some level of distant relative.

I am a convert from Mormonism. Several family members are still in the LDS church. My genealogy book is about a foot thick, and has page after page with one name, all the way back to "Noah." Of course, the provable pages have a lot more names on them...
