I would suggest that in the future that you should end such questions stating your sincerity. Something like "I am sincerely curious."

This happened several years ago, so I don't remember my wording. But, I do know that I am always careful to word such questions carefully. I always try my hardest not to offend people. So, I assume my wording was not provocative.

I just assumed from your first post that your post was not provocative, but was misunderstood as being provocative.

People here have become so accustom to simple questions leading into a trap of some sorts, that they have become very gun shy, perceiving an attack or an offense often where none was meant.

My point is that because of the lack of civility that has raged in this forum for so long, we must go beyond merely being unprovocative and we must declare our sincerity.

It is not right that we should have to do so, but until we can build up a sense of trust between Christians in this forum once more, it is what we must do. Kindness is contagious.

"I am sincerely curious."

When one is questioning another's beliefs, I believe one must avoid (accidentally or deliberately) sneaking a hidden premise into the question.

For example, I understand that most Protestants, Evangelicals, etc. hold to a belief that is often called "sola scriptura". Let us suppose that I'd like to learn more about where that comes from, and I ask:

"Why do you folks worship a book by claiming that the Bible is the sole rule of faith?"

If I posed the question that way, I'd have sneaked in an accusation of "bibliolatry" ... and any Protestant who found it offensive would be quite justified in doing so. My example is a bit contrived, but it's not hard to do that sort of thing accidentally ... and the other guy won't know it's an accident.
