I think your misunderstanding might be the realization that there is a difference between TOTAL depravity and UTTER depravity. The first (total depravity) says that NOTHING we do is good outside of Christ. The second (utter depravity) says that we ALWAYS do the absolute WORST imaginable at all times.

Due to the common grace of God, He protects his people and His creation from utter corruption and evil which would be man’s normal proclivity.

No actually total depravity says that man is so corrupt that he is unable to make a decision for God there for God had to do a thing called predestination.
