what happens in vegas ...

... stays in Vegas. Right, Eminence? An AP headline reads Catholic Cardinals Meet in Las Vegas for Fundraiser. Just the right tone of prayerful recollection. The desert experience.

LAS VEGAS -- Catholic Church leaders gathered in Las Vegas on Friday for an annual mass and fundraiser to benefit Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

[chop]

Five of the seven cardinals currently serving as archbishops of U.S. dioceses were scheduled to attend the events, including Cardinals Edward Egan of New York, Roger Mahony of Los Angeles, Sean O'Malley of Boston, Adam Maida of Detroit and Justin Rigali of Philadelphia.

The mass was to be followed by a fundraiser at the Four Seasons Hotel, where the Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada would be honored and awarded $10,000. The university says the annual event has raised more than $21 million.

Several years ago already, in an essay in Crisis, Prof. Ralph McInerny deplored the USCCB's practice of gathering in flashy hotels. There are plenty of monasteries with plenty of empty rooms, he pointed out. And the photos of the bishops at make-shift matins in a basement conference room speaks louder than any document about which conveniences they regard as indispensable and which not. In the present case, thankfully, the Mass was not held at a hotel, only the squeeze play took place there. But even the cocktail waitresses at the Four Seasons Las Vegas will be able to intuit something out of whack in that particular conjunction of red silk and raised funds.

If no abbey were available, why not Chuck E. Cheese?

Yeah, but are there any cocktail waitresses?

I'm not sure.

Cdl Rigali came to Atlanta and gave an impassioned speech condemning those who support or condone abortion to the Thomas More Society Mass (attended by many non-Catholic and Catholic-in-Name-Only judges and lawyers).

It got the local branch of the society in some trouble with the judges and lawyers. So he ain't all bad.

Okay, I'll jump in and defend this. If it were a meeting of the USCCB, I'd agree with you that the shouldn't be having a meeting at a fancy hotel in Vegas.

BUT this is a fundraiser for a University. I'm sure, despite the way the AP reported on it, that this is not a gathering of 7 bishops and a few monks who've taken a vow of poverty. This is an attempt ot raise significant amounts of money for CU. And the way to raise significant amounts of money is to attract potential donors with significant amounts of money, or to attract a significant number of people who can donate a "decent" amount of money. That's the point of having something like this in Las Vegas: people with resources will show up.

This reminds me of a story I heard Bill Steltemeier tell on EWTN:

Mother Angelica used to go to the annual cable TV convention every year. She would walk over to the the Playboy TV booth and pray the rosary. He said you never saw nearly naked women scatter so fast.

That's Awesome!

Here's another 'living' saint. God bless Mother and the network of Catholic communication she forged around the world, despite setbacks and Playboy bunnies ;-)

That is a riot!

I can just see Mother Angelica, just standing there. Or saying something like "Woe betide thee!"

The rest of the story that Raymond Arroyo relates in his book is that Mother would then give the girls sacred heart badges and engage them in conversations about their faith
