For education to catch on, though -- AND for folks to have the TIME to study -- the economy has to change from subsistence agricultural to town-centered market.
There's a reason Luther's followers were bourgeois townsfolk. They were the only ones with the time to get educated. The borderline farmers scratching a living worked from can to can't and didn't have the money for candles or even a fire.
