WASHINGTON - Rep. Rosa L. DeLauro and 13 other Catholic members of Congress released a letter Tuesday calling on Catholic bishops to help end the war in Iraq.
"As Catholic members of Congress, we stand in unison with the Catholic Church in opposition to the war in Iraq," the Democratic 3rd District congresswoman said in a statement. "Yet to attain the ideal of peace, we must not only speak the words, we must take action."
As a result, she and her colleagues sent a letter to the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, or USCCB, urging it to "mobilize Catholic opinion on this, one of the most critical issues of our time."
The members want to meet with key Catholic officials. They reminded the conference that "throughout our nation's history, Catholics have been at the forefront of the fight for social justice. Now, at another critical moment, we respectfully urge the USCCB to join with us in mobilizing support for Congress' efforts to end the war."
DeLauro has opposed U.S. war policy from the start.
She was joined in this letter by Ohio Democratic Reps. Tim Ryan and Dennis Kucinich, Rep. Jose E. Serrano, D-N.Y., and others.
Sister Mary Ann Walsh, director of the USCCB media relations office, said Tuesday that the bishops "just received the letter," and noted "the bishops have voiced concern for the conflict in Iraq repeatedly since the war began and have repeatedly called for a responsible transition."
Last fall, USCCB President William Skylstad said, "The search for genuine justice and peace in Iraq requires moral urgency, substantive dialogue and new directions."
"If we understand the Catholic tradition correctly," the members of Congress wrote, "thoughtful church leaders around the world do not believe that the war in Iraq meets the strict conditions for a just war or the high moral standards for overriding the presumption against the use of force. We agree and seek an end to this injustice."

If the Congressmen are successful in getting the churches to engage in political advocacy, they should have their 501c3 tax status revoked.

Exactly. These nuts have the gall to ask for the Church to fight for their position on Iraq, but then sign letters to the bishops telling them to back off on Abortion. The gall of these heathens.

It’s okay with them if they kill completely innocent children but they think fighting people who want to kill us and their fellow religious, and their own countrymen AND women and children is bad. Go figure.

This comes from the Congresswoman who has openly and repeatedly defied the Church on abortion, effectively daring the bishops to call down the wrath of God on her. What a monster she is!

But Catholic leaders had better keep their nose out of the abortion debate. But the Iraq war...come on in!
Hypocrisy.
Lest anyone forget, DeLauro is NOT Catholic. She (and the rest of her ilk in Congress) has excommunicated herself from the Church because of her pro-abortion stand. No one should refer to her as a Catholic. To be Catholic means to be united IN ONE FAITH. She does not believe what the Church teaches. The Catholic Church is not a cultural entity to which one belongs by osmosis.
Why isn’t the ACLU fuming over this?
So Catholic bishops’ stating that Catholic politicians who facilitate abortion laws should not take communion is an intolerable breach of the separation of Church and State, but Catholic bishops should speak up so long as it is for the sake of favored left-wing causes?
