IIRC, a new synagogue would start when there were 10 families in a city. Since these ten families paid tithe, plus other offerings, the rabbis salary would be the average of his congregation.

In the midwest that may mean working for 20,000 per year. On the coasts, that may mean scraping by on 100,000+.

Larger churches also are known for better stipends to traveling evangelists. A love offering is usually much different when coming from 1,000 folks than 10 folks.
