That's not what John 3 says. Catholics aren't born again, they are born into a system, maybe that's why it's so unimportant to them. However, Jesus certainly says it's necessary

Kresta goes on to say “[The Bible] uses a lot of different images: a half a dozen to a dozen different images to represent salvation”. Obviously he is aware of John 3, but there is also John 6 with the “flesh of the Son of Man”, numerous passages about perseverance, 2 Peter 1 about spiritual growth, the parable of the young man about obedience, charity and discipleship, the Sermon on the Mount about love, poverty and humility, John 10 about hearing Christ’s voice and being secure in God’s hand, 1 Peter 3:21 about baptism by water, several places in Acts about repentance, ... did I get half a dozen yet?

I remember Kosta had a great list of things that the Bible calls salvific.
