Vespers -- Evening Prayer

Vespers (Evening Prayer)

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

A suitable hymn may be inserted at this point.

Psalm 136 (137)
By the rivers of Babylon
By the rivers of Babylon
 we sat and wept
 remembering Sion.
On the willow-trees of Babylon
 we hung up our harps.

In that place they asked us,
 those who had captured us,
 to sing them a song:
“Sing us”, they said,
 “a song of Sion”.
They had brought us affliction
 and asked us for joy.

How shall we sing the songs of the Lord
 in a foreign land?
Jerusalem, if I forget you,
 send my right hand to oblivion;
let my tongue stick in my throat
if I do not remember –
if I do not rank Jerusalem
 the first of my joys.

Remember, Lord, the Edomites
 on the day of Jerusalem:
“Raze it”, they said, “to the ground”.
Babylon’s daughter, destroyer –
blessed be he that takes his revenge,
that smashes your child on a rock.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 137 (138)
Thanksgiving
I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart, for you have heard the words of my mouth.
In the presence of the angels I will make music to you, worship before your holy temple.
I will praise your name because of your mercy and faithfulness: high above all other names is the greatness of your word.

Each day that I call on you, Lord, listen to me, strengthen my spirit.
All the kings of the earth will proclaim your glory, Lord, when they hear your word.
They will sing of the paths of the Lord, so great is his glory.
For the Lord is on high but he cares for the humble; and he knows the proud from afar.

If I walk in the midst of troubles, you will give me life. If my enemies rise up against me, your right hand will keep me safe.
The Lord does all that I need. Lord, your kindness lasts for ever: do not forsake the work of your hands.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Canticle Apocalypse 4,5
The song of the redeemed
You are worthy, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honour and power;
for you made all things, and it is by your will that they existed and were created.

You are worthy, Lord, to receive the book and open its seals,
for you were killed, and with your blood you have ransomed people from every tribe and language and people and nation,
and made them rulers and priests for God; and they will rule over the earth.

The Lamb is worthy, who was killed, to receive power and riches and wisdom, strength and honour, glory and blessing.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Short reading Colossians 3:16 ©
Let the message of Christ, in all its richness, find a home with you. Teach each other, and advise each other, in all wisdom. With gratitude in your hearts sing psalms and hymns and inspired songs to God.

Canticle Magnificat
My soul rejoices in the Lord
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God, my salvation.
For he has shown me such favour –
 me, his lowly handmaiden.
Now all generations will call me blessed,
because the mighty one has done great things for me.
His name is holy,
his mercy lasts for generation after generation
 for those who revere him.

He has put forth his strength:
he has scattered the proud and conceited,
 torn princes from their thrones;
 but lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things;
the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
he has remembered his mercy as he promised to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Prayers and Intercessions ?
Christ gives power and strength to his people. We proclaim his greatness and sincerely pray:
Listen to us, Lord, and we will praise you for ever.
Christ our strength, you have called your faithful to believe in your truth:
take pity on their weakness and give them a firm and undeviating faith.
Lord, direct those who rule over us:
guide them to lead us in peace.
Lord, you filled the hungry crowds with bread:
teach us to give from our abundance to those who hunger.
Make rulers think not just of their own countries:
make them respect all men and work for their interests.
Give our brethren who have fallen asleep resurrection into blessed life,
when you come again to be glorified in all who have believed in you.
Our Father, who art in Heaven,
 hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
 and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those that trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
 but deliver us from evil.

As we pray in your sight, Lord, we beg for your kindness:
may we carry always in our hearts
what we proclaim with our voices.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
 God for ever and ever.
Amen.

May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm; and may he lead us to eternal life.

The Word Among Us

Meditation
Matthew 19:23-30

The young man who earnestly asked Jesus, “Teacher, what good must I do to gain eternal life?” had only one obstacle to following Jesus: He was too attached to his possessions. He loved his wealth to the point that it prevented him from accepting Jesus’ invitation (Matthew 19:16,21-22). Yet through the centuries, countless men and women have taken Jesus’ call to heart, and have literally given up all they had to honor and serve the Lord.

St. Anthony of Egypt (251–356) was forever changed when he read Jesus’ words in Matthew: “Go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven” (Matthew 19:21). He promptly obeyed, parting from everything he owned and taking up a life of prayer and solitude. The intensity of Anthony’s commitment changed the face of the church, inspiring other men and women to follow in his footsteps, and virtually founding the monastic movement.

But it isn’t only saints of the distant past or priests and religious who have chosen to follow the counsel of evangelical poverty. Dorothy Day (1897–1980) was a layperson and a founder of the Catholic Worker Movement, who started her ministry by opening hospitality houses for homeless workers. Known for her austere lifestyle and her desire to be one with the poor, she once said: “The best thing to do with the best things in life is to give them up.” Like Anthony, the witness of her life has influenced many other laypeople to reach out to the destitute.

What do these saints have to say to us? While not all of us are called to embrace absolute poverty as they did, their lives challenge us to examine whether our riches may be holding us back. Have our comfort, our desire for more, and our abundance of goods closed us off from everything that God wants to give us? Are there possessions—or even attitudes—that we can’t seem to let go of? Jesus asks us to leave behind whatever is weighing us down on our journey toward heaven. His invitation to “sell” all that we have is not meant to be a burden but a joy that leads us to the freedom of loving God without reservation.

“Lord, may the example of the saints inspire all your children to live detached from this world and to draw closer together as your brothers and sisters!”

Judges 6:11-24; Psalm 85:9,11-14

WITH OR WITHOUT?

" 'I shall be with you,' the Lord said." —Judges 6:16

Gideon asked: "If the Lord is with us, why has all this" misfortune "happened to us?" (Jgs 6:13) God simply answered: "I shall be with you" (Jgs 6:16). Jesus' disciples "were completely overwhelmed" (Mt 19:25) at His "impossible" demands (Mt 19:26). Jesus' answer was: "I am with you always" (Mt 28:20).

Humanity is in a rough spot. We have a fallen nature, a twisted heart (Jer 17:9), and are prone to self-deception. God doesn't throw money at our problem, enroll us in self-help classes, or simply eliminate our problems. God's answer is to send us Jesus, " 'Emmanuel,' a name which means 'God is with us' " (Mt 1:23).

We need relief from suffering; Jesus is with us in our suffering to strengthen us and guide us safely through our crosses. We need money; Jesus is with us as our Wealth (Phil 3:8). We are victims; Jesus is with us as a fellow Victim, our "Vindicator" (Jb 19:25), and "our Justice" (1 Cor 1:30). The Lord is with us as our Love (1 Jn 4:8), Peace (Eph 2:14), Strength (Phil 4:13), Counselor (Jn 14:26), Wisdom (1 Cor 1:30), Life (Jn 11:25), and our All.

Would you rather have good health, or the God of health? Would you rather have a life with no problems, or God with you amid your problems? Would you rather have the supplies you need, or the God Who can supply all things? (Phil 4:19) To prefer the loot instead of the Lord is to live a preview of hell, that is, a life without God (see Catechism, 1035). The great reward of heaven is not riches, but being with the Lord forever. Choose Him now.

Prayer: Lord, when I have You with me, I have all I need.
Promise: "It is I Who send you." —Jgs 6:14
Praise: Pope St. Pius X asked, "Who would not be fired with love as he looks on the likeness of Christ, the Redeemer?"

Compline -- Night Prayer

Compline (Night Prayer)

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

This is an excellent moment for an examination of conscience. In a communal celebration of Compline, one of the penitential acts given in the Missal may be recited.

A suitable hymn may be inserted at this point.

Psalm 142 (143)
A prayer in time of trouble
Lord, I trust you: do not hide your face from me.
Lord, listen to my prayer:
 in your faithfulness turn your ear to my pleading;
 in your justice, hear me.
Do not judge your servant:
nothing that lives can justify itself before you.

The enemy has hounded my spirit,
he has crushed my life to the ground,
he has shut me in darkness, like the dead of long ago.
So my spirit trembles within me,
 my heart turns to stone.
I remind myself of the days of old,
I reflect on all your works,
I meditate once more on the work of your hands.
I stretch out my arms to you,
I stretch out my soul, like a land without water.

Come quickly and hear me, O Lord,
 for my spirit is weakening.
Do not hide your face from me,
do not let me be like the dead,
who go down to the underworld.
Show me your mercy at daybreak,
because of my trust in you.
Tell me the way I should follow,
for I lift up my soul towards you.
Rescue me from my enemies:
Lord, I flee to you for refuge.
Teach me to do your will,
 for you are my God.

Your good spirit will lead me to the land of justice;
for your name’s sake, Lord, you will give me life.
In your righteousness you will lead my soul
 away from all tribulation.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.
Lord, I trust you: do not hide your face from me.

Reading 1 Peter 5:8-9
Be calm and keep watch. The Devil, your enemy, is circling you like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, strong in faith.

Short Responsory ?
Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
You have redeemed us, Lord, God of faithfulness.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.

Canticle Nunc Dimittis
Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.
Now, Master, you let your servant go in peace.
 You have fulfilled your promise.
My own eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the sight of all peoples.
A light to bring the Gentiles from darkness;
the glory of your people Israel.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.
Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.

Prayer
Let us pray.
Of your kindness, Lord, dispel the darkness of this night, so that we your servants may go to sleep in peace and wake to the light of the new day, rejoicing in your name.
Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

May the almighty Lord grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.
A M E N
An antiphon to Our Lady should be recited here.
