Lauds -- Morning Prayer

Morning Prayer (Lauds)

If this is the first Hour that you are reciting today, you should precede it with the Invitatory Psalm.

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

A suitable hymn may be inserted at this point.

Psalm 62 (63)
Thirsting for God
O God, you are my God, I wait for you from the dawn.
My soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you.
I came to your sanctuary,
as one in a parched and waterless land,
so that I could see your might and your glory.
My lips will praise you, for your mercy is better than life itself.

Thus I will bless you throughout my life,
 and raise my hands in prayer to your name;
my soul will be filled as if by rich food,
and my mouth will sing your praises and rejoice.
I will remember you as I lie in bed,
I will think of you in the morning,
for you have been my helper,
and I will take joy in the protection of your wings.

My soul clings to you; your right hand raises me up.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Canticle Daniel 3
All creatures, bless the Lord
Bless the Lord, all his works, praise and exalt him for ever.

Bless the Lord, you heavens; all his angels, bless the Lord.
Bless the Lord, you waters above the heavens; all his powers, bless the Lord.
Bless the Lord, sun and moon; all stars of the sky, bless the Lord.
Bless the Lord, rain and dew; all you winds, bless the Lord.
Bless the Lord, fire and heat; cold and warmth, bless the Lord.
Bless the Lord, dew and frost; ice and cold, bless the Lord.
Bless the Lord, ice and snow; day and night, bless the Lord.
Bless the Lord, light and darkness; lightning and storm-clouds, bless the Lord.

Bless the Lord, all the earth, praise and exalt him for ever.

Bless the Lord, mountains and hills; all growing things, bless the Lord.
Bless the Lord, seas and rivers; springs and fountains, bless the Lord.
Bless the Lord, whales and fish; birds of the air, bless the Lord.
Bless the Lord, wild beasts and tame; sons of men, bless the Lord.

Bless the Lord, O Israel, praise and exalt him for ever.

Bless the Lord, his priests; all his servants, bless the Lord.
Bless the Lord, spirits of the just; all who are holy and humble, bless the Lord.

Ananias, Azarias, Mishael, bless the Lord, praise and exalt him for ever.

Let us bless Father, Son and Holy Spirit, praise and exalt them for ever.
Bless the Lord in the firmament of heaven, praise and glorify him for ever.

Psalm 149
The saints rejoice
Sing a new song to the Lord, his praise in the assembly of the faithful.
Let Israel rejoice in its maker, and the sons of Sion delight in their king.
Let them praise his name with dancing, sing to him with timbrel and lyre,
for the Lord’s favour is upon his people, and he will honour the humble with victory.

Let the faithful celebrate his glory, rejoice even in their beds,
the praise of God in their throats; and swords ready in their hands,
to exact vengeance upon the nations, impose punishment on the peoples,
to bind their kings in fetters and their nobles in manacles of iron,
to carry out the sentence that has been passed: this is the glory prepared for all his faithful.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Short reading Exodus 23:20 - 21 ©
I myself will send an angel before you to guard you as you go and to bring you to the place that I have prepared. Give him reverence and listen to all that he says.

Canticle Benedictus
The Messiah and his forerunner
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has come to his people and brought about their redemption.
He has raised up the sign of salvation in the house of his servant David,
as he promised through the mouth of the holy ones, his prophets through the ages:
to rescue us from our enemies and all who hate us, to take pity on our fathers,
to remember his holy covenant and the oath he swore to Abraham our father,
that he would give himself to us, that we could serve him without fear – freed from the hands of our enemies –
in uprightness and holiness before him, for all of our days.

And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High: for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare his path,
to let his people know their salvation, so that their sins may be forgiven.
Through the bottomless mercy of our God, one born on high will visit us
to give light to those who walk in darkness, who live in the shadow of death;
to lead our feet in the path of peace.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Prayers and Intercessions ?
Beloved brethren, a host of angels stands before the Lord and praises him with one voice. Let us proclaim his name with rejoicing:
All his angels, bless the Lord.
O God, you commanded your angels to keep us safe in all our ways:
lead us in your footsteps today and keep us free from sin.
Father, the angels in heaven see your face always:
may we unceasingly strive to share that sight with them.
O God, your children will be like the angels in heaven:
keep us pure in heart and body.
O God, send Michael the great prince to the aid of your people,
to defend us in battle against Satan and his angels.
Our Father, who art in Heaven,
 hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
 and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those that trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
 but deliver us from evil.

O God, in your infinite providence you deign to send your holy angels to be our guardians. Grant to us who pray to you
that we may be defended by them in this life
and rejoice with them in the next.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
 God for ever and ever.
Amen.

May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm; and may he lead us to eternal life.

Feast of the Guardian Angels
Father Edward McIlmail, LC

Matthew 18: 1-5, 10
The disciples approached Jesus and said, "Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?" He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said, "Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me. See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father."

Introductory Prayer: Father in heaven, thank you for giving me another day to grow in love for you, another day to move ahead in my spiritual life, another day to pray for the souls closest to me. Drive away all distractions and keep my mind centered on you alone. I only want to please you during this brief time of prayer.

Petition: Lord, grant me the grace of childlike simplicity.

1. Turning the Tables    The disciples are curious about the Kingdom of Heaven, and their curiosity has a tinge of self-interest. They want to know how to get ahead in the Kingdom. Their very question belies a misunderstanding of Christ. The Kingdom, among other things, is reflected in the Church on earth. And the Church, being universal, is a kind of family that takes in all mankind. If ever we ask, “Who is the greatest in our family?” we can be sure that it is the wrong kind of question. The more appropriate question is: “How can I be a better member of the family? How can I be a better husband? A better wife? A better son or daughter or brother or sister?” That is the question Christ wants us to ask ourselves.

2. Child´s Play    We must not think that Christ had a naive notion of children as little angels who never do wrong. He was aware that even the Old Testament spoke of the wisdom of disciplining unruly children. "Withhold not chastisement from a boy" (Proverbs 23:13). So why does Christ hold up children as models for the rest of us? In part, it is their simplicity, their tendency to trust. They might not understand why a parent tells them something, but they likely will accept it because they realize it comes from someone who loves them. The spiritual life requires that same kind of trust. We might not understand completely why God asks us to do something, but if there´s a basic trust and openness to him, it is easier to follow his commands. Many people, unfortunately, squander what should be the most productive years of their lives because they doubt God and his Church. They complicate things, only to find years later the wisdom of what Our Lord was trying to tell them. By then, their faults can be forgiven, but not undone. Am I saying no to God because of a lack of trust?

3. Angelic Aid    Prayers to guardian angels used to be popular with Catholics. It is fitting that we pray to them because each of us has one. "Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life," writes St. Basil (see Catechism of the Catholic Church, 336). Our angel reflects God´s loving providence for our welfare and protection. The world is a moral minefield, waiting for us to make the wrong step. Our angel helps us make it through this valley of tears. Do I ever think to pray to my angel?

Conversation with Christ: The simplicity of children can make me look foolish by comparison. I believe in you and trust you, Lord. Help me to translate that trust into serenity and simplicity. Let me accept the crosses of daily life with calmness, seeing your loving designs behind them.

Resolution: I will say yes to the next difficult thing someone asks of me, so long as it is something morally good.

Meditation
Matthew 18:1-5,10

The Guardian Angels

Have you ever noticed how sensitive some children are? They seem to know just what you’re thinking—if you’re having a good day or a bad day, or if you just need help. Their eyes are so innocent, and yet they take in so much more than we think. Sometimes they will just speak right up and tell you what’s wrong—before you even notice it yourself! “Out of the mouths of babes” can indeed come amazing wisdom.

Perhaps that’s why Jesus used a child to teach his apostles about heaven. They wanted to know who was the greatest in his kingdom. In a childish way, they wondered if it was one of them. They were coming to him as competitors, as if the one who did the most for God would win. But Jesus showed them a child to let them know it’s the one who is childlike, who listens, obeys, and forgets himself—one who follows with innocence and intensity. It is the childlike who treasure a feast day like today, because they believe in and rely upon angelic help and protection.

We can easily fall into the same trap the apostles did if we put serving the Lord ahead of relating to him. He wants us to put him first in our lives, but we can’t do that by running ourselves ragged. His first concern is that we come to know him, and that we are filled with his life-giving Spirit. That’s what will make us vessels of his mercy, doing his will and not worrying so much about the seating arrangement in heaven!

How does true humility begin? Not by asking the Lord to knock us down to size but by accepting his love for us. We are all his sons and daughters, and he doesn’t favor one of us over another. We become humble by focusing on his greatness, not our smallness. The best way to become sensitive to his grace is to spend time with him: to give thanks to him for what he has done for us, and to learn of his ways. The more we sit at his feet, in fact, the more prepared we’ll be for heaven—because that’s exactly what we’ll be doing for all eternity!

“Lord, you know my dreams, plans, and projects. Right now, I put them on your altar. You are the Lord of my life—direct everything according to your perfect will!”

Zechariah 8:20-23; Psalm 87:1-7

RUNNING WITH THE ANGELS

"My angel will go before you and bring you to the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hivites and Jebusites; and I will wipe them out." —Exodus 23:23

Each one of us has a guardian angel, but many deny or ignore that reality, so their guardian angels are unemployed. We would have personal experiences of angels if we lived in such a way as to need angelic guard duty. Angels are not primarily security guards but resemble guards on a football team. A football guard pulls from the line of scrimmage and blocks for the one running with the ball so the ball carrier can cross the goal line.

The Lord said: "See, I am sending an angel before you, to guard you on the way and bring you to the place I have prepared" (Ex 23:20). Our guardian angels will guard us on our touchdown runs by wiping out the enemy (Ex 23:23) and bringing us to the end zone. We have a job for our guardian angel if we're carrying the ball and running for a score, that is, if we're on the offensive, attacking the gates of hell (Mt 16:18), if we're evangelizing and running the race (Phil 3:12).

If we're running for Jesus, we need our guardian angels to block for us. Don't expect angels to sit around guarding an inanimate object such as an apathetic Christian who "is among the living dead" (1 Jn 3:14). You've got to play the game to meet the team.

Prayer: Father, thank you for "interior linemen," like guardian angels.
Promise: "See that you never despise one of these little ones. I assure you, their angels in heaven constantly behold My heavenly Father's face." —Mt 18:10
Praise: Donna prays many times during the day to her guardian angel for protection and guidance.

Vespers -- Evening Prayer

Vespers (Evening Prayer)

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

A suitable hymn may be inserted at this point.

Psalm 48 (49)
The uselessness of riches
All peoples, listen –
all who live in the world, hear what I have to say:
humble and great together,
 rich and poor alike!

My mouth will speak wisdom,
my inmost thoughts will bring good counsel.
I will turn my ears to a mystery,
I will expound a riddle on the lyre.

Why should I be fearful in times of trouble,
when the crimes of usurpers hem me in?
They trust in their own strength
and glory in their great riches.

But, after all, man cannot redeem himself,
he cannot ransom himself before God.
The price of his soul’s redemption is too great, he cannot pay it –
the price of eternal death avoided.
He will see that even the wise die;
the foolish and the stupid too will perish,
and their riches will pass to others.

Their tombs will be homes to them for ever,
 their dwelling-place for all generations,
even if the lands they owned are named after them.
Though he be full of honour, man will not endure:
 he is like the beasts of burden, that die;
he is like the beasts that perish.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Psalm 48 (49)
Those who trust in themselves – this is the road they take.
This is the end of those who boast.
Like sheep they go down into the underworld,
 and death is their shepherd.
They will fall headlong into the grave:
their faces will be eaten away,
and the underworld will be their dwelling-place.

But God will ransom my life;
truly he will lift me from the grasp of the underworld.
Do not fear, when a man becomes rich
and the glory of his house increases.
When he dies, he will not take it with him,
his glory will not follow him down to the grave.
Even if he calls himself blessed,
says “see how they praise me for my success”,
still he will join his fathers,
cut off from light, for ever.

Though he be full of honour, yet he does not understand.
 He is like the beasts of burden, that die;
he is like the beasts that perish.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Canticle Apocalypse 4,5
The song of the redeemed
You are worthy, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honour and power;
for you made all things, and it is by your will that they existed and were created.

You are worthy, Lord, to receive the book and open its seals,
for you were killed, and with your blood you have ransomed people from every tribe and language and people and nation,
and made them rulers and priests for God; and they will rule over the earth.

The Lamb is worthy, who was killed, to receive power and riches and wisdom, strength and honour, glory and blessing.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Short reading Apocalypse 8:3 - 4 ©
An angel with a golden censer came and stood at the altar. A large quantity of incense was given to him to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar that stood in front of the throne; and so from the angel’s hand the smoke of the incense went up in the presence of God and with it the prayers of the saints.

Canticle Magnificat
My soul rejoices in the Lord
My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God, my salvation.
For he has shown me such favour –
 me, his lowly handmaiden.
Now all generations will call me blessed,
because the mighty one has done great things for me.
His name is holy,
his mercy lasts for generation after generation
 for those who revere him.

He has put forth his strength:
he has scattered the proud and conceited,
 torn princes from their thrones;
 but lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things;
the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel,
he has remembered his mercy as he promised to our fathers,
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.

Prayers and Intercessions ?
Let us pray to the Lord that, with the angels who do his will, we may be made more eager to hear his words:
With the angels we sing the praises of your glory.
O God, you have made the angels messengers of the wonders you perform:
with their help make us your messengers to mankind.
Most high Lord, the angels unceasingly proclaim your holiness:
grant that your praise may resound in the Church forever.
You have sent your angels to watch over your servants in their ways:
make all travellers arrive safely home in peace and rejoicing.
You sent the angels to proclaim peace to men:
send them to bring counsel of peace to rulers and peoples.
When you send your angels to gather your chosen ones from the four corners of the earth,
may all your children be numbered among those you have chosen.
Our Father, who art in Heaven,
 hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
 and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those that trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
 but deliver us from evil.

O God, in your infinite providence you deign to send your holy angels to be our guardians. Grant to us who pray to you
that we may be defended by them in this life
and rejoice with them in the next.

Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
 God for ever and ever.
Amen.

May the Lord bless us and keep us from all harm; and may he lead us to eternal life.

Compline -- Night Prayer

Compline (Night Prayer)

O God, come to my aid.
O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen. Alleluia.

This is an excellent moment for an examination of conscience. In a communal celebration of Compline, one of the penitential acts given in the Missal may be recited.

A suitable hymn may be inserted at this point.

Psalm 142 (143)
A prayer in time of trouble
Lord, I trust you: do not hide your face from me.
Lord, listen to my prayer:
 in your faithfulness turn your ear to my pleading;
 in your justice, hear me.
Do not judge your servant:
nothing that lives can justify itself before you.

The enemy has hounded my spirit,
he has crushed my life to the ground,
he has shut me in darkness, like the dead of long ago.
So my spirit trembles within me,
 my heart turns to stone.
I remind myself of the days of old,
I reflect on all your works,
I meditate once more on the work of your hands.
I stretch out my arms to you,
I stretch out my soul, like a land without water.

Come quickly and hear me, O Lord,
 for my spirit is weakening.
Do not hide your face from me,
do not let me be like the dead,
who go down to the underworld.
Show me your mercy at daybreak,
because of my trust in you.
Tell me the way I should follow,
for I lift up my soul towards you.
Rescue me from my enemies:
Lord, I flee to you for refuge.
Teach me to do your will,
 for you are my God.

Your good spirit will lead me to the land of justice;
for your name’s sake, Lord, you will give me life.
In your righteousness you will lead my soul
 away from all tribulation.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.
Lord, I trust you: do not hide your face from me.

Reading 1 Peter 5:8-9
Be calm and keep watch. The Devil, your enemy, is circling you like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, strong in faith.

Short Responsory ?
Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
You have redeemed us, Lord, God of faithfulness.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
- Into your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit.

Canticle Nunc Dimittis
Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.
Now, Master, you let your servant go in peace.
 You have fulfilled your promise.
My own eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the sight of all peoples.
A light to bring the Gentiles from darkness;
the glory of your people Israel.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
 world without end.
Amen.
Keep us safe, Lord, while we are awake, and guard us as we sleep, so that we can keep watch with Christ and rest in peace.

Prayer
Let us pray.
Of your kindness, Lord, dispel the darkness of this night, so that we your servants may go to sleep in peace and wake to the light of the new day, rejoicing in your name.
Through Christ our Lord, Amen.

May the almighty Lord grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.
A M E N
An antiphon to Our Lady should be recited here.

From: Zechariah 8:20-23

Ten promises of messianic salvation (conclusion)

[20] “Thus says the Lord of hosts: Peoples shall yet come, even the inhabitants of
many cities; [21] the inhabitants of one city shall go to another saying, ‘Let us go at
once to entreat the favour of the Lord, and to seek the Lord of hosts; I am going.’
[22] Many peoples and strong nations shall come to seek the Lord of hosts in
Jerusalem, and to entreat the favour of the Lord. [23] Thus says the Lord of hosts:
In those days ten men from the nations of every tongue shall take hold of the robe
of a Jew, saying, ‘Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you.’”

*********************************************************************************************
Commentary:

8:20-22. The new situation described by the prophet will be marked by efforts on
the part of the nations to seek the God of Israel, the one, true God. All will find
divine favour in Jerusalem. This will mean the fulfillment of God’s promise to
Abraham that all the nations of the earth would be blessed in him (cf. Gen 12:3).
The picture painted by the prophet is a figure of what will happen with the coming
of Christ and the establishment of his Church.

8:23. Here the prophet graphically describes the power of intercession with God
that the Jews will have, enabling all mankind to find favour with him. The number
ten symbolizes completeness, and the name “Jew” here means an inhabitant of
Judea after the return from exile (cf. Jer 32:12). “By saying that men of every
tongue shall take hold of the robe, it is made abundantly clear that on that day the
call to holiness will be heard not only by the Israelites, but by all men and women
everywhere throughout the world” (St Cyril of Alexandria, Commentarius in
Zacchariam, 8, 23).

Memorial: Guardian Angels

From: Exodus 23:20-23a (Canada)

Warnings and promises

[20] “Behold, I send an angel before you, to guard you on the way and to bring
you to the place which I have prepared. [21] Give heed to him and hearken to his
voice, do not rebel against him, for he will not pardon your transgression; for my
name is in him.

[22] But if you hearken attentively to his voice and do all that I say, then I will be
an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries.

[23] “When my angel goes before you, and brings you in to the Amorites, and the
Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites,
and I [will] blot them out.

Commentary:

*23:20-33. As an appendix and conclusion to the Code of the Covenant, the
sacred writer put together these various warnings or promises. Strictly speaking,
this is not a formal epilogue of the type usually attached to the end of codes of
laws (cf. Lev 26 for the Code of the Holiness, and Deut 28 for the Deuteronomic
Code) because it contains no blessings or curses, and makes no specific refer-
ence to the preceding laws. It is more a collection of instructions based on the
fact that God is close to his people; it is designed to fortify Israel’s hope and
encourage it to be faithful.

“I send an angel before you” (v. 20). The word “angel”, according to St Augus-
tine, refers to his office, not his nature. “If you enquire as to his nature, I will tell
you that he is a spirit; if you ask what it is he does, I will tell you that he is an
angel” (Enarrationes in Psalmos, 103, 1, 15). The expression “angel of the Lord”
is equivalent to the presence of God himself or his direct intervention (cf. 3:2;
14:19 and also Gen 16:7; 22:11, 14). However, when Scripture speaks of an
“angel” or “my angel” (cf. Ex 33:2; Num 20:16) it seems to refer rather to those
spiritual beings who are attentive to the Lord’s commands and are faithful doers
of his word (cf. Ps 103:20). The role assigned to them is that of guarding the
people in the name of the Lord, just as they protected Lot (cf. Gen 19) or Hagar
and her son (cf. Gal 21:17). On the basis of this biblical teaching, the Church
holds that angels continue to lend men the same mysterious and powerful help.
“Each member of the faithful has at his side an angel as a protector and shepherd
to lead him towards life” (St Basil, Adversus Eunomium, 3,1; cf. Catechism of the
Catholic Church, 334-336).

Whereas he sends an angel to the Israelites, he sends two scourges against their
enemies – terror (v. 27) and a plague of hornets (v. 28). As usual when the Bible
tells us this, it does not mean that God is wicked, but rather that, since he is the
only Supreme Being, all blessings and all misfortunes are attributable to him.
Furthermore, it is very much in the style of Semitic literature to make a play of
contrasts – the misfortunes of enemies are a way of showing how well one is
being treated oneself.
