True Comfort is to be Sought in God Alone

THE DISCIPLE
WHATEVER I can desire or imagine for my own comfort I look for not here but hereafter. For if I alone should have all the world's comforts and could enjoy all its delights, it is certain that they could not long endure. Therefore, my soul, you cannot enjoy full consolation or perfect delight except in God, the Consoler of the poor and the Helper of the humble. Wait a little, my soul, wait for the divine promise and you will have an abundance of all good things in heaven. If you desire these present things too much, you will lose those which are everlasting and heavenly. Use temporal things but desire eternal things. You cannot be satisfied with any temporal goods because you were not created to enjoy them. Even if you possessed all created things you could not be happy and blessed; for in God, Who created all these things, your whole blessedness and happiness consists -- not indeed such happiness as is seen and praised by lovers of the world, but such as that for which the good and faithful servants of Jesus Christ wait, and of which the spiritual and pure of heart, whose conversation is in heaven, sometime have a foretaste. Vain and brief is all human consolation. But that which is received inwardly from the Truth is blessed and true. The devout man carries his Consoler, Jesus, everywhere with him, and he says to Him: "Be with me, Lord Jesus, in every place and at all times. Let this be my consolation, to be willing to forego all human comforting. And if Your consolation be wanting to me, let Your will and just trial of me be my greatest comfort. For You will not always be angry, nor will You threaten forever." |

Absolutely no flaming! These daily threads are intended to be devotional in nature. If a particular day's offering says nothing to you, please just go on and wait for the next day. Consider these threads a DMZ of sorts, a place where a perpetual truce is in effect and a place where all other arguments and disagreements from other times and places are left behind.
I can attest from personal experience (Salvation's) that reading from Imitation of Christ daily will almost certainly change - not one's faith - but one's perspective of his/her own faith, and open up new vistas in your spiritual life. If - when - this happens to a reader of these threads, and they choose to share what has happened within them - we are treading on hallowed ground. Be respectful.

The things we "desire too much" are often difficult for us to see ourselves. We just take our disordered earthly desires for granted. Speaking from personal experience, you don't realize your inordinate desire until the object of desire is taken away from you.

Our charge, from God, I think, as human, is to enjoy all that we might of our lives on this earth within the Ten Commandments.
Or are we to suffer willingly, carrying our own cross (pains, family troubles, gossip, auto mishaps, family deaths, etc.) thus keeping our eye on God and eternal life with him constantly?

But these things, pains, family troubles, gossip, auto mishaps, family deaths, etc. have always been and will be with us in the world. But, as Dennis Prager says, "We have a moral obligation to be happy, because happy people do more good in the world."
In other words, God wants us to be happy, for His sake and for the sake of others.
Do you think there are any people unhappy for the sake of others happiness? How could that make those others happy?
Do you think islamists are happy for the sake of goodness?
Not me. I believe God made us to be happy, and to project that into the world as much as is humanly possible.
I don’t disagree with you. But I sincerely believe that when our time comes to die and we meet our creator, what we did to make ourselves happy will not matter at all.
What will be most important is what we did to make God happy. I believe that means serving others also in accordance with the Commandments.
Happiness Is A Serious Problem by Prager, aforementioned.
Remember too, Bishop Sheen: "If everyone lit just one little candle, what a bright world it would be!"
