Truth Truck impounded/damaged by local Georgia police

Press release from www.operationrescue.org:

Georgia Cops Impound Anti-Abortion Billboard Truck, Jail Driver

Atlanta, Georgia - Bob Roethlisberger was arrested and jailed over Thanksgiving weekend in a northern suburb of Atlanta, Georgia, on the charge of "Disorderly Conduct" for driving Operation Rescue´s Truth Truck bearing signs with photos of aborted babies. The Truth Truck was impounded.

Gwinnett County Police Department officers arrested Roethlisberger Saturday after telling him that signage on the Truth Truck was "vulgar and obscene." Officers ransacked the back of the Truth Truck without a warrant and ordered Roethlisberger to change or remove the signs. When he refused, he was arrested and incarcerated for three days before being released on $1,000 bond.

The Truth Truck was released from impound late Monday, however both the signs and the mounting hardware on the truck were damaged when police forcibly ripped the signs off the sides of the truck. Monetary damage to the property is estimated to be in the thousands of dollars.

"It is obvious that these police officers, under the direction of Major Thomas Bardugon, engaged in a serious incident of unconstitutional content-based discrimination and illegal distruction of property," said Operation Rescue President Troy Newman. "Bob fully cooperated with officers, but refused to compromise on his message, which is unequivocally protected by the First Amendment. The officers misused their authority to punish Bob for expressing a viewpoint that ran counter to theirs. The arrest was nothing less than an egregious abuse of power."

Newman discussed the matter with Major Bardugon who refused to drop the charges and threatened to arrest Newman if he drove the Truth Truck through Bardugon´s jurisdiction.

The Truth Truck was in Georgia because of a recently introduced Human Life Amendment that is scheduled to be considered by the State Legislature in January. The Truth Truck´s mission was to help draw the attention of Georgians to the reality that abortion brutally takes an innocent human life, and emphasize the need to ban the grisly procedure.

Operation Rescue manages a fleet of Truth Trucks that have traveled tens of thousands of miles from coast to coast over the past seven years. The right to display those images has been upheld in courts across the nation, which have also ruled that obscenity laws do not apply to aborted baby images.

"We intend to vigorously fight these unjust charges, and will seek a remedy for our property loss," said Newman. "We cannot allow the illegal use of police authority to bully us into silence, when such silence could cost innocent human lives."

Please contact the Gwinnett County Police Chief and ask for:

The immediate dismissal of charges against Roethlisberger
The immediate reimbursement for damages to the Truth Truck
An apology

I wonder if hard core pornography is allowed over the Cable System in this city.

If it is, it is far worse than any picture on these trucks.

First Amendment rights are being trampled on here.

Additionally, the fact that police intentionally damaged the truck is of great concern.

Dear friends,

Please distribute this to all your prolife contacts within a 3 hour driving distance of Gwinnett County GA.......from Jenny Hodges and email me back if you can help us. -- Michelle W.

Thanks to all of you who have been in prayer and active in spreading the news of this grevious injustice to Bob, and contacting the Police Department in Gwinnett. I'm very grateful that Bob has given his time to come to Georgia and educate the public on the horror of abortion. We agree that the pictures of aborted babies are horrific and should not be! That's why they are shown.

According to a close friend of mine, Gwinnett County Police Department has a history of abuse. This is the perfect opportunity for all of us to take a stand for innocent Georgians aborted weekly in Greater Atlanta, but also an opportunity for us to stand against the tyranny and injustice of the police department in Gwinnett against our friend Bob Roethlisburger.

On Saturday, December 1st, Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue, will be at the Gwinnett County Mall of Georgia at 4pm with cameras rolling. We are calling a press conference, and inviting the Georgia Senators and Representatives from the district, and other community leaders including Rev. William Brown and Alveda King to join us.

Now we need you! Please come and be a part of this event. Bring your aborted baby signs, your living fetal baby signs, and all else. We need a show of numbers. This is an opportunity for us to stand for justice and for the unborn. If you are planning on attending, let Michelle W. know. We would like to have a general idea of how many folks to expect.

The event will also be available on the internet live, at www.prolifenews.tv

See you on Saturday!

For the Little Ones,
Jenny

Most people in the pro-life movement in the Atlanta area know who Michelle W. is and also know her email address...

You can’t drive around with porn on the side of your car.

I would not bet that the courts would agree with you. And you certainly could drive around with art showing nudity on your car. For example if you want to reproduce a Rubens on your car or deplay a Rubens print on the side of your car, do you really think anyone would stop you?

This was and is all about political speech and daring to disagree with the agenda of the left. You or I might consider the truth truck tasteless and counter productive, but that is not the concern of the police.

Received email via the Helpers of God's Precious Infants network.

Thank God for Monsignor Philip Reilly and his wonderful work.

I remember the wonderful Saturday at an abortion clinic in Brooklyn where there were more babies saved than babies aborted at that abortion clinic.

Though another Pro-Life group uses this slogan, truly the media of The Helpers of God's Precious Infants is the streets...

One trademark of Monsignor Philip Reilly, whose cost per visit of an abortion clinic is about $5 to $20, is that he blesses the pro-life workers before he leaves.

The only reason his costs are so high is that he does fly overseas and spend a month at an abortion clinic overseas, or goes to different parts of the country setting up local chapters of the Helpers of God's Precious Infants.

The car he drives is quite modest, but he has earned the respect of the NYPD.

How is the picture of an unborn baby pornography?

That is like saying the Holocaust of the Jews during WWII never happened because the pictures of the Holocaust should be censored as hard core pornography...

I think your handle has devil correct and 666 correct...

I am not sure what you are advocating though...

It is not what I consider the US Constitution is all about...

He charges $20 to protest at an abortion clinic? How long does he stay at that price?

Though I'm adamantly anti-abortion, and believe these folks have a constitutional right to portray these images, I've got to say that I am not necessarily a supporter of these "Truth Trucks", or at least not the way I've seen them used. I've attended various family events, where it is known that small children would be in attendance, and one of these trucks drove around repeatedly. It was nearly impossible for the young kids not to see these pictures. Last summer, I asked a friend's 3-year-old son what he saw after attending our local "Woodward Cruise" with his dad and my husband, and he replied, "I saw pictures of dead babies."

Again, though I believe they have a right to display these images, I don't know that they're a convincing or effective way to express their anti-abortion views. JMHO

I would have the “officers” who tore the truck apart arrested... then take them to federal court... Sounds like a job for the conservative version of the ACLU the ACRU http://www.theacru.org/ ...

I agree that there must be a way to protect the children from this (I agree that the images are obscene) but I don’t see how... The libs have no problem with indoctrination from an early age ... a server at my wifes restaurant had an abortion less than a month ago ,,, she took her daughter (10?) with her while “she had an unwanted growth removed”.

I’d rather my kids see these than pictures of woman on woman or man on man affection, or pictures from school books about Johnny’s two mom’s, people hating God etc...

I have no problem indoctrinating my children to the truth just like the NEA and libs do every day in schools and tv shows across our country.

When I say cost, I figured out that the transportation costs and other costs that Monsignor Philip Reilly incurs are quite modest.

It is not a fee paid.

Gasoline in NYC is about $3.50 a gallon (higher taxes). I think he spend about a $1 to get to one abortion clinic and maybe another $1 to get to another, and then another $1 to get back to where he stays.

He goes every day the abortion clinics are open in NYC, and he is there in NYC.

He also makes trips to other parts of the country -- to help start HELPERS OF GOD'S PRECIOUS INFANTS groups. He almost always goes to an abortion clinic as part of that.

There are some pro-life leaders that spend about $500 per visit to an abortion clinic. I know of one in particular that though he lives in the NYC area, he does not visit the local abortion clinics.

His costs are much higher because he normally stays at a pricey hotel, and even if he could take a train, he flies if possible.

Again, Monsignor Reilly does not charge to visit abortion clinics -- it is just the cost to him. He also receives ample support for his travels...

I imagine there are some pro-life leaders that may spend anywhere from $50,000 to $1 million a year on travel expenses...

In 2004, I drove with CBR (Center for Bio-Ethical Reform).

They were targeting certain elections that year trying to get pro-life candidates.

We were sensitive to where we went when we were displaying the pictures.

It is also a different approach -- they use the word ABORTION, FETUS, and something to indicate the size of the aborted baby (such a dime or pencil head).

They also show the aborted baby.

This is CBR's RCC -- the Reproductive Choice Campaign -- which is what RCC stands for.

We went around business areas during the day while school was in. Downtown Atlanta, Downtown Charlotte, etc.

Small kids would see the trucks, but how can that be helped?

At one point, I was volunteering, but I was not 100% committed to this. I questioned what I was doing.

Then something happened in MACON, GEORGIA that changed my mind for good -- and to support the effort.

It was a woman's re-action to the truck passing in front of me -- I was in a Security car as a chaser.

At first she shook her head back and forth as if to say no! no! no! Then she shrugged her shoulders and then bowed her head as if to accept what she saw as the truth of what happens with an abortion -- an aborted baby -- not a blob of tissue...

Does one allow babies to be killed because some innocent children might see ugly things that are really happening in this country? Do we swept it under the carpet? How is the word to get out?

I like the approach of CBR with the RCC, but also with GAP campaign. The GAP, or Genocide Awareness Project, sets up displays on college campuses.

And maybe that should also be done at the High School level -- if schools would allow it...
