This interpretation is based upon the fact that the current European Union has it's roots in the Treaty of Rome.

Can you elaborate on the interpretation you're presenting?

But isn’t Turkey (Byzantium, or Rum) part of EU? That would be much of the Roman Empire, except Egypt and Libya, (and Palestine)
