REVIEW: Prince Caspian Rules

From the moment we walked into the Theatre I could feel the excitement in the air.

The make up of the crowd spoke to both the extraordinary appeal of the writings of C.S. Lewis and, I would soon discover, the brilliance of this wonderful film. The Box Office results from the first weekend confirmed what I was about to experience.

Prince Caspian Rules.

The audience was an inter-generational sampling of every ethnic variety of family. There were grandfathers and grandmothers, mothers and fathers, children of every age, teenagers, and grandchildren. As the lights dimmed, many people were hurriedly trying to find a seat, while they juggled their popcorn, hoping not to be too conspicuous.

It was the first time in years that I have actually seen the movie ushers have to come along with flashlights to help people to find empty seats.

As the film begins, the deep, stark darkness of the land ruled by the self appointed evil King Miraz, ruler of the Telmarines, reached out from the big screen to draw the audience in. The texture, sound and visual effects were magnificent...

I went to a free advance screening on Mon May 12. :) It reminded me a lot of Lord of the Rings. If you liked those movies you will like this one.

Wow, very nice :)

Yes, I loved LotR, and I also loved the first Narnia movie ... it was all I could do not to break into tears right in the theater, during the ‘Stone Table’ scene.

This movie underperformed its opening weekend. Disney and Walden Media is committed to the next movie Dawn Treader (sp?) but if you want the other books from the series made into movies you must go see Prince Caspian. If this movie does not perform forget about Hollywood making anything Christian related again.

Well, perhaps it underperformed compared to each of the Lord of the Rings movies, but it did pretty well, nonetheless. It pulled in $55 million on the way to being number one at the box office for its first weekend, according to the Box Office Mojo site. I don’t think the message is being sent that the movie is a “clunker” in the public’s view. Still, Christians should support the movie for its own sake and for the motives you cite. My family will be seeing it this weekend.

>>It pulled in $55 million on the way to being number one at the box office for its first weekend, according to the Box Office Mojo site.<<

Honestly, it fairly well bombed.
It cost 200 Million and opened in 3000 theaters with nothing significant opening against it. It made 55 million.

Compare that to Ironman that made 170 million opening weekend with much less hype.

Seriously, we need to go see this and send a message to Disney that this is what we want. It’s a good movie from what I hear, just not being seen. We need to get the numbers up and make up for the opening weekend. If the numbers come up for Memorial Day, THAT is a message. Once Indiana Jones opens, this becomes a battle.

$55 million in the first weekend is hardly “bombing.” Movies that take in that amount have an excellent chance of taking in more than $200 million by the end of their first run in the US alone. And movies of this genre tend, in the international market, to take in between 50% of the US amount all the way to parity with it. Also, according to Box Office Mojo, which updates their figures daily, Ironman only took in $106 million in its first weekend, not $170 as you said. And, in the 16 days since then, it has only just doubled that, and stands at $228 million. I suspect that the new Narnia film will have better staying power. Its reviews are uniformly excellent - only the axe-to-grind atheists are panning it, and for all the very reasons we think the movie is great!

I hope lots and lots of people go to see this movie, but I hope they see it on its own merits. it doesn’t need to be perceived as needing a palpably drummed-up “rescue mission.” It’ll do just fine. There will be nothing to worry about with regard to continuing the series. You’ll see!

I'm looking forward to seeing the movie.

Side note.. Whats with the recent appearance of the [OPEN] tags on thread titles? Is that some kind of demand?

If its something worthy, I can understand a parenthetical "MUST READ" that I have seen many times. But what is "OPEN"?

The movie Cost 200 Million.
You’re talking about breaking even. Yeah it will make money, but very few movies don’t.

Narnia was a huge hit. Caspian is not. And the money for it will be made in DVD/Blu-ray.

And I stand corrected on Ironman. Must have misunderstood the Nephew in the business. He told me. The gross is 436,131,318 in 16 days. Worldwide does count. And it beat Narnia in grosses by day. It’s 17th. Narnia is 51st. Caspian is no where near it.

But 106 is nearly double what Caspian took in, too.

I went to see it and enjoyed it way more than Speed Racer, which is like being trapped for two hours in a pinball machine. But I thought it was overlong and I have to confess that when all the other Telmarines are clearly supposed to be Arabs, having Prince Caspian speak with a Spanish accent (I think that’s what it was) kind of made him hard to swallow. Also every time he said “You killed my father” I was instantly taken back to The Princess Bride. The kid is a good actor and cute, but did they really think that accent wouldn’t be noticeable?

I did not feel that this movie was as well done as the first one. But then, the book is not as good as the first one either. Dawn Treader ought to be much better, if they pay attention to their casting and if they tighten up the screenplay.

I will buy the DVD when it comes out.
