Whether or not you agree with anything this Pope has said, I don't think any [social] conservative can say that 200 years of modernism has been positive for the world's society.

Interestingly, Pius IX, Leo XII, and Pius X were all minor Italian bishops who came from nowhere, so to speak, to greatness. Leo XIII was the most “noble” of the three, but even he come from the minor aristocracy. The Church remains the only true meritocracy. A future pope may at this moment be running around in an Indian village, pestering his big sister.
