Hopefully the English translations will be up soon. Both the Pope and Patriarch delivered their sermons in perfect Italian.

I wonder whose Italian accent is better. Somehow I expect Bartholomew’s exceeded Benedict’s (given the peculiarities of his crisp Bayerische rhythm).

Yes, indeed, Archbisho Nienstadt from St. Paul is getting invested or conferred or whatever it's called.

Just before JPII died, my wife and I spent eight glorious days in Rome. Great Caesar's Ghost! That's an interesting city! I think we only made one real mistake. We stood in line to take an elevator into the dome level at St. Peters. If we did it again, I think we would skip the elevator and walk up. It would be MUCH faster, even with a possible need to take a rest or two along the way.

I once watched a monsignor elevated to bishop. That was fascinating. It might round things out to see ceremonies for the next couple of promotions. I don't ever want to see a guy get promoted to Pope. We left Rome and JPII died within about 72 hours. It seemed to me that city closed, read that C-L-O-S-E-D! to the extent that it bacame a ghost town except for the throngs of people left to mill about here and there.

Otherwise, I'd go back to Rome and the Vatican in a heartbeat.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I

His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI
