“They are Christian Innoculation Centers. People go there to receive weekly vaccinations so they won’t come down with the real thing.”

LOL, APPY PAPPY! I used to go to a church like Osteen’s only on a smaller scale. Way too much focus on self and self-help. Then I converted to Catholicism—what a difference! I was in the regular Navy and now I’m in the Navy Seals. :0)

I am almost convinced my CPA son planned the birth of their daughter for the first part of December.

I guess some still do. I was under the impression his career was totally defunct until I moved to Louisiana 7-8 years ago and discovered he still had a little thing going on down here. I guess you can fool some of the people all of the time.

On another thread, over on the news forum, we read that Victoria Osteen threw her against a bathroom door and elbowed her in the left breast.

The same article report that the plaintiff Brown claims that she suffers from anxiety and hemorrhoids because of the incident and said her faith was affected. She is also suing Victoria Osteen for medical expenses for counseling.

Now I have been in the health care field in one way or the other since 1979, and I never knew that being elbowed in the breast can cause hemorrhoids! Learn something new every day!

Hey Marlowe, think Ms Brown has a case?

So it appears. A fool and his money are soon parted.

Well, I've read 75 responses and not one has come to the defense of the Osteen's. I am ready to be flamed so here goes.

I don't watch him all the time. He comes on after Fox News Sunday in the Washington, DC area - 10 AM. It's not the whole shebang. Just his 30 minute sermon, talk, whatever you want to call it. I don't see or hear the same thing everyone else on this thread seems to see and hear. He speaks about Jesus more than my Catholic preist does, who spends more time talking about how good MLK, Jr., was. He concludes by saying a simple prayer to Jesus and urges people to get into a Bible bassed church. I never hear him make personal pleas for people to send money to him. What I take from him are simple messages - God provides for you. You must have faith. Your prayers will not be answered immediately. They will be answered in ways you do not anticipate. No matter what happens to you in life, if you choose God, nothing can stand against you. I bought his book, read it, and liked it. Did not Jesus say to knock and the door will be opened? Did not Jesus say that to continue to pray to God and your prayers will be answered?

Concerning the lawsuit - I heard on FNC last night that the stewardess that she suffered from broken faith and a hemroidal attack! Please! I don't know what happened on that flight but I get the impression it's someone looking for an easy payday. And who knows - maybe God is sending all of them - and us - a message.

Anyway, I repeat I like listening to Joel Osteen.

I think being hit in the right breast causes a rash.

She's going to get convicted of a misdemeanor, pay a fine, community service, yada. yada. yada.

Maybe it was the throwing her against the door part that caused hemorrhoids, rather than the elbow to the breast. But, that does sound like a wierd injury to claim from a scuffle on an airplane.

You are right 7thson - Joel does not beg for money on his show like the televangelists do. His message is upbeat and does reference Jesus and the Bible. I will give him credit for that. Also, his wealth is from his book sales, in fact I read that he no longer takes a salary from the Church because he is comfortable with his book proceeds.

However, the problems some have are with the amount of money spent to purchase his current building and remodeling - I'll look it up but I recall something like 80 million dollars going into this megachurch which holds 16,000 people at a time. They have to hire police officers to direct traffic to get in and out of the service. Again, that is the right of the parishoners if they want to attend a megachurch - but have you ever noticed there isn't a cross on his stage? There is a world and fountains, but no cross. Isn't the cross kind of an important symbol to Christians?

As I was looking up the info on the renovations, which by the way are in a leased building, not purchased - so the 75 million is to a LEASED building.... gosh - anyway I did find a couple of comments from folks who said the sermons they heard included 10 minutes of Victoria warming up the congregation with platitudes to her husband, then his sermon about being the best you can be... no mention of the Bible. Maybe that was a non-broadcast sermon, I don’t know.

My former CPA said my son is kind of anal, even for a CPA. He got that part from my ex-wife. His wonderful personality came from me.

Here’s the Devotion where I got the line:

Inoculated Weekly?
Theme of the Week: Contagiously Radical
Tuesday, July 15

Key Bible Verse: “If you try to keep your life for yourself, you will lose it” (Mark 8:35). Bonus Reading: John 12:20-26
Vaccinations that insert bits of a dangerous disease into my body leave me leery. Not to worry, doctors explain. I’m being exposed to weak or dead elements of the disease so my body will produce antibodies to combat it.

This is what happened to many Christians. They have been vaccinated with dead or weak forms of Christianity. The antibodies they’ve built up combat the powerful, radical contagion of authentic Christianity, leaving none of the severe symptoms of the virulent, revolutionary strain that kills the old way we live and gives birth to a new life that’s a carrier of the infection.

When Jesus said, “Follow me,” he wasn’t talking about trailing him to a Sunday school class. He was saying, “love your enemies”; “pray for those who abuse you”; “if your eye leads you to sin, gouge it out”; “love me more than you love your children or parents”; “confess your sins openly to each other.”

If we tone down Christ’s drastic demands, we aren’t following him. Many churches are no more than inoculation clinics. People go there to receive weekly vaccinations so they won’t come down with the real thing.

—John Sartelle in TableTalk

My Response: Can non-Christians live next to me with no fear of catching what I’ve got?

Thought to Apply: It’s not our responsibility to make people /Christians/, but to help people decide to follow Jesus and his radical message. The New Testament writers only use Christian three times but /disciple/ on 269 occasions! —Tom Getman (relief agency official)
