While it would be preferrable to use a deacon or priest to fill the subdeacon role in a Solemn High Mass, or, as an initial falback to that, an instituted acolyte, a layman trained in the role is all that is necessary if the circumstances allow for no better option. This has been done in many places, to no deleterious effect.
