Scriptorium

Lat, “A place for writing”

Additions to medieval libraries and monasteries that were designed for the reproduction of ancient texts by scribes and copyists. Many biblical texts were produced in the scriptorium, but the scribes reproductive assignments were not limited to the Scriptures.

I’ve often tried to imagine the scenes in imagined scriptoriums of the monks who had to transcribe the works of Marcus Valerius Martialis (”Martial”).

Scriptoria would also have been a commercial enterprise.

Read a book on ancient libraries a few years back. I think this is it. Fascinating. It's amazing we have anything from pre Gutenburg times. And, can you imagine copying something like Aquinas' Summa, by hand.
