Catholics Keeping Catholics in the Dark

October 4th, 2008 by Brad OLeary

At a family gathering I was shocked when I learned I had children and grandchildren planning to vote for Barack Obama.  Their reasoning was he was handsome, articulate, and “for change.”  Yet none of them could tell me what he stood for on any of the issues.  I thought the best way to educate them would be to draft a letter, detailing Obama’s stances on the important issues of the day.  However, I soon realized that I had a enough material for a book, and so, The Audacity of Deceit: Barack Obama’s War on American Values, was born.

What began as an effort to educate my children and grandchildren has become a popular tool for educating tens of thousands of Americans who will be voting for the first time.

When conducting my research, as a Roman Catholic, I was particularly troubled when I discovered the extreme positions Obama has taken on the issue of abortion.

Obama has stated that the very first thing he’d do as President would be to sign the Freedom of Choice Act, a federal law that would nullify all of the existing state restrictions on abortion.  This bill would codify abortion as a legal right at any stage of pregnancy, eliminate laws like parental notification, and also require that abortions receive taxpayer funding.

As a State Senator in Illinois, Obama almost single-handedly led a fight to deny emergency medical assistance to viable babies who were born alive after botched abortions.  These babies were being discarded after birth, literally left to die slow, painful deaths.  Obama fought to keep this practice in place.  Even the pro-abortion lobby group NARAL wouldn’t join Obama in his fight, perhaps thinking the practice was too barbaric even for them.

Now, as a veteran political consultant, I know politics is a nasty business and I am well acquainted with phenomenon of certain media outlets refusing to run paid advertising on the grounds that they don’t agree with the ad’s message.

However, I never expected to have paid advertising for my book censored by nearly every Catholic diocesan newspaper editor in the country.

The ad in question simply provides public polling information that shows a majority of Catholics are opposed to abortion.  The ad also provides Barack Obama’s well-documented stance on various issues pertaining to abortion.  The ad, and my book for that matter, do not specifically endorse any candidate, nor do they urge readers to vote for, or against, any candidate.

Despite all of this, only two dioceses out of 194 agreed to run this paid advertisement in their papers.

Though the ad was deemed to be in accordance with Catholic teaching by a Catholic review board that screens such ads prior to submitting them to individual Catholic publications, nearly every diocese rejected the ad for being “too political.”

While my paid advertisement is “too political,” many of these same dioceses had no problem publishing a piece disseminated by the Catholic News Service that praises Obama’s pro-abortion running mate, Senator Joe Biden, as an ally of the Church and its policy interests.

The Catholic News Service, however, did not publish the results of a poll taken by Zogby International that shows that 56 percent of Americans and 54 percent of Catholics think the actions of these editors is censorship.  Surprisingly, 63 percent of people who say they “never attend church” also consider it censorship.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops calls abortion an “intrinsic evil” and states:  “A Catholic cannot vote for a candidate who takes a position in favor of an intrinsic evil, such as abortion.”

Why would nearly every Catholic diocesan newspaper editor nationwide reject a non-partisan ad that simply promotes a book and seeks to educate Catholics on an issue of great importance to them?  This year, millions of young Catholics will be exercising their right to vote for the first time.  Don’t they deserve to be equipped with the knowledge they need to make an informed decision?

Archbishop Raymond Burke, the prefect of the Vatican’s Apostolic Signature, recently stated:  “It is simply ridiculous and wrong to try to silence a pastor, accusing him of interfering in politics so that he cannot do good to the soul of a member of his flock.”

What would the 55 Bishops, who have made public statements condemning Obama and Biden’s position on abortion, say about their editors silencing a member of the flock who seeks to do the same?

I am thinking that Bishop Martion makes 56.

Here is the list of Bishops who came out against Pelosi et al.

Updated: American Bishops who have spoken against Pelosi

Here is the complete list of American bishops who have responded to Nancy Pelosi's comments so far:
  1. Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver was the first American bishop to respond
  2. ... Bishop James Conley, his auxiliary, joined him
  3. Archbishop Donald Wuerl of Washington DC responded twice, first in a press release and second in a statement to The Hill. He has also appeared on Fox News, I am told.
  4. Cardinal Justin Regali of Philadelphia, chairman of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities, issued this statement through the USCCB website...
  5. ... Bishop William Lori of Bridgeport, chairman of the Committee on Doctrine, joined him
  6. Cardinal Edward Egan of New York publised a strongly worded statement of his own
  7. Bishop Samuel Aquila of Fargo issued a letter correcting Pelosi's claims
  8. Bishop David Zubik of Pittsburgh and...

  19. Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, President of the US Bishops, has weighed-in
  20. Bishop Robert Vasa of Baker, OR publishes in the Catholic Sentinel
  21. Bishop Jerome Listecki of La Crosse, WI responds in a word document
  22. Bishop Richard Lennon of Cleveland, OH will comment in his September 5th column (PDF)
  23. Bishop Ralph Nickless of Sioux City, IA has one of the very best responses I've read
  24. Archbishop George Niederauer of San Francisco has invited Pelosi to a "conversation"
  25. Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of Brooklyn: "Judging the Candidates"

{Last updated on September 10th.}

Notes:

  • Previous #23 has been removed. Bishop Joseph Gossman of Raleigh, NC is actually the bishop emeritus, and the new bishop, Michael Burbidge has not, to my knowledge, made a personal statement.
  • Previous #16 has also been removed, it was an erroneous duplication of current #13.
  • #26 was added September 10th, although he published his column September 6th

"As a State Senator in Illinois, Obama almost single-handedly led a fight to deny emergency medical assistance to viable babies who were born alive after botched abortions. These babies were being discarded after birth, literally left to die slow, painful deaths. Obama fought to keep this practice in place." ... These sentences show how effective the Obama disinformation campaign has been.

What Obama was fighting to prevent was the outlawing of a particular method of aborting, of killing alive premature babies. He was not trying to block aid to children born AFTER a botched abortion, he was seeking to protect a type of abortion called induce labor abortion where the preemie is forced to be born prematurely then left to struggle and die, unattended, alone.

This paerticulalry demonic way to kill the alive unborn--by forcing them out of the womb prematurely then neglecting them until they struggle and die--was becoming so poular that the United States Congress passed the Born ALive Infant Protection Act to stop the monstrosity Barack Obama tried to protect in Illinois.

Most American bishops come from Democratic roots. It’s a legacy of the immigrant Church of 80 to 150 years ago, when most immigrants went into the labor force and found the Democrats more in tune with their needs. Republicans then were a Protestant stronghold.

In recent generations, the party most in line with Catholic thought, belief, and precepts - human rights, free will, individual responsibility, respect for life, civic duty - has become the conservative wing of the Republican party. The Democrat party has become the haven for secular statists.

But like the yellow dog Democrats who grew up in a mind set where you were a Democrat, these bishops can not divest themselves from the Democrat roots of their families. So they just can’t bring themselves to do anything that would hurt the Democrat party - even when they party now stands for things anathema to Catholic teaching.

Good evening.

When the First lady and I went to Mass today, she spied an Obama sticker on a vehicle. The First lady said, "how can they be for Obama, when he is for abortion?"

The homily was a video about life, and how the Lord cherishes all of us, whether disabled, unborn or whatever the case may be. The black parishioners who were supporting Osama had a tear in their eye.

Catholics need to tell every pro-lifer they know, and those on their e-mail list, that Obama voted four times to allow babies born ALIVE from a botched abortion to die on a shelf.

Even Hillary Clinton and John Kerry didn’t get this extreme on this.

“As a nurse at an Illinois hospital in 1999, I discovered babies were being aborted alive and shelved to die in soiled utility rooms. I discovered infanticide.

Legislation was presented on the federal level and in various states called the Born Alive Infants Protection Act. It stated all live-born babies were guaranteed the same constitutional right to equal protection, whether or not they were wanted.

BAIPA sailed through the U.S. Senate by unanimous vote. Even Sens. Clinton, Kennedy and Kerry agreed a mother’s right to “choose” stopped at her baby’s delivery.
The bill also passed overwhelmingly in the House. NARAL went neutral on it. Abortion enthusiasts publicly agreed that fighting BAIPA would appear extreme. President Bush signed BAIPA into law in 2002.

But in Illinois, the state version of BAIPA repeatedly failed, thanks in large part to then-state Sen. Barack Obama. It only passed in 2005, after Obama left.”

I was walking into Mass this evening, with my daughter. She saw a car that was backed into a parking spot next to the church building.

“Minnesota plates.” she said.

I said, “they probably backed in so nobody could see their Obama sticker.”

After Mass, I saw the guy pulling out, and sure enough, there was an Obama ‘08” sticker on the back of his car.
After listening to the homily about the duty of Catholics to not support politicians who support abortion, I doubt he’ll be back to our Parish

You are nice. I probably would have rushed out after Mass to ask that person if they still were going to vote for the baby killer.

I don’t think some of these Catholics realize that they are excommunicating themselves by supporting abortion.

If what you say is true and I have no reason to not believe you these bishops should be defrocked. They are helping to lead their flock into a state of sin.

Obama Says A Baby Is A Punishment

Obama: “If they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby.”
Our Country Deserves Better than Barack Obama for our next president & Commander in Chief.

The Our Country Deserves Better PAC has one objective: to defeat Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election. We won't be subtle or vague - America's future is at stake, and it's time someone stood up to Barack Obama and told the American people why this man cannot, and must not, serve as our next Commander in Chief.

We are going to give the American people the truth in no uncertain terms because that is what they expect, but haven't been getting from either the news media or many of our political leaders.

The out of touch bishops are being replaced by Pope Benedict with good ones. For that we are eternally grateful. Meanwhile we continually try to change the minds of some of the contrary ones.
