'Silhouette City' Captures Essence of Christian Right as Supremacist Political Movement
By Bruce Wilson
It is the mark of a truly outstanding documentary that it can survive the test of a fast-changing political and religious landscape and remain relevant and even transcendent. There have been many superb documentaries in the last few years about religion and politics, but my own personal opinion is that Michael W. Wilson's Silhouette City stands above the pack, and for one overriding reason - Wilson's deep understanding of the dynamic in which the militant, militia-movement grounded Christian right of the 1980's has morphed into a political movement that has penetrated the highest reaches of American governmental and military structures.

There are a lot of movies bashing Christians that Hollywood is throwing at us! Of course there's Religulous, but the one I'm most afraid of is this one Silhouette City (http://www.silhouettecity.com). It's even more insidious because it tries to treat "moderate Christians" (a.k.a. faithless churchgoers) as the heroes and isn't obviously anti-Christian. Watch out for this one, because it seems to be flying under the radar of sites like this one, but it's playing all over.

Silhouette City traces the evolution of the apocalyptic and Reconstructionist strands of the militant American Christian nationalist, or supremacist, movement from its militia movement roots in the 1980's up through its penetration of America's highest political and military structures, and that aspect should concern all who have any awareness at all of the Christian right political movement aimed at imposing Christian theocratic government on the United States and on the world:

Christian nationalists do not need the support of a majority of Americans or even a substantial minority : the very origins of the movement were profoundly anti-democratic and remain so. Power is the overriding objective.

So, ah, what if you're an atheist that's sympathetic with the "apocalyptic and Reconstructionist strands of the militant American Christian nationalist, or supremacist, movement"?

Well, you'll be a pretty lonely atheist, because it seems that the lions' share of atheists are leftist socialist humanists. Indeed, most atheists on observation aren't atheists, they are anti-theists; they know there is a God, and they hate His guts beyond imagination. They are little versions of Satan, of whom the book of Revelation (Rev 12:12) says "Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time."

I saw a sig here on fr that said something like "If there wasn't a God, there wouldn't be atheists." I think that's a pretty profound statement.

All you have to do is look at how Christians have demonstrably lost power and influence, over government and the culture at large, over the last 20+ years, to prove the author wrong.

. . the Christian right political movement aimed at imposing Christian theocratic government on the United States . . .

Every time I look at the deductions on my paycheck, I can see the imposition of liberal values on America.

**There are a lot of movies bashing Christians that Hollywood is throwing at us! **

Our priest said that there would be at least Catholic/Christian bashing movies before Christmas. This certainly doesn’t sound good.

Get the word out and boycott them and their studios as well as the producers.

Huh?

He remembers a different history than I do. The militia movement was a reaction to Clinton era gov't excesses, not something from the Ronaldus Magnus years. Just wait 'til you see what the Obamessiah will spawn. if and when.

You will find atheists (and Christians, I hasten to add) among the libertarian remnant. Not something I would expect a leftist to be able to distinguish -- everything to the right of Bush I blurs together.

This bizarre mindset is only comparable to the insistence from the Nazis that the Jews were the secret masters of the world even as they were exterminating them.

From the article:
A significant percentage of the population sees these looming crises through a specific lens: a belief that humanity is waging the opening skirmishes of a cosmic war between Good and Evil that will usher in the Kingdom of God. Such belief enables an ever-escalating sense of urgency - very real threats to the middle and lower classes (outsourcing, rising fuel and food costs, etc) combine with perceived threats (secularism, homosexuality, ethnic/religious others) to become overwhelming evidence of the tribulations that signal apocalypse."

I find this amusing considering how often I hear the proclamation either that eschatology doesn't really have any practical significance on the day-to-day, or that those who disagree with a particular popular book-generating eschatology are false teachers sent by Satan.

When I look at the degree of superficiality in some of contemporary Western Christian culture, I'm scared too :)

"And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet."

A sagging 401K is not to be compared with having the Assyrians outside your city walls, or having Nero as your Emperor.
