Here’s the thing...neither Snowe nor Collins represents a rightwing constituency. Both of them will continue to be re-elected as long as they choose to run because the people of Maine are behind them in overwhelming numbers. Their position on the stimulus bill is the position of their electorate. Now it appears that most of the opposition to the stimulus bill is from below the Mason/Dixon line. For a host of historical reasons, most over the past 30+ years having to do with energy issues, Maine voters and politicians have no interest whatsoever in advancing the agendas of Southern or Western right wing politicians. That’s the reality and there is absolutely nothing anyone outside of Maine can do politically to hurt either of these senators. In fact, there’s nothing anyone inside of Maine can do either. Both parties have tried with the same result.
