Attributed to St. Patrick
Paraphrased by Cecil Frances Alexander

I bind unto myself today the strong name of the trinity,
by invocation of the same, the Three in One, the One in Three.

I bind this day to me forever by power of faith Christ's incarnation,
his baptism in the Jordan river, his death on the cross for my salvation;
his bursting from the spiced tomb, his riding up the heavenly way,
his coming at the day of doom I bind unto myself today.

I bind unto myself today the power of God to hold and lead,
his eye to watch, his might to stay, his ear to harken to my need,
the wisdom of my God to teach, his hand to guide, his shield to ward,
the Word of God to give me speech, his heavenly host to be my guard.

Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me;
Christ to comfort and restore me;
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

I bind unto myself the name, the strong name of the Trinity,
by invocation of the same, the Three in One, and One in Three,
of whom all nature hath creation, eternal Father, Spirit, Word;
praise to the God of my salvation, salvation is of Christ the Lord!

The words above are attributed to Patrick, but may not be written by him. It is found in many variations. Some leave out the middle section, some have only the middle section, and some are more or less like what you see here. This version is an example that contains all the verses that are normally associated with the shield, which is also sometimes called the Breastplate of St. Patrick.

I just found this at Geocities.com

As for the snakes, although a popular legend, it is geologically known that there never were any in Ireland to begin with. His connection with that legend stems from the Viking misinterpretation of his name. Paud in the old norse language meant a toad, and when the Vikings heard of a Saint called Paud-rig, who had lived in Ireland before their coming, they concluded it meant toad-expeller. That was only the beginning, because the legend was reinforced by the Church's representation of the Devil in the form of a serpent, and Patrick driving the Devil out of Ireland in that form. The fact that there were none led to the question, "what happened to them,” and the answer was easily found in his traditional statue. However, Patrick is more revered for what he brought to Ireland, than what he drove away. Yet he was not the first to bring Christianity . . . but he was by far the most effective.

From my saints of the day book, I think this is a beautiful prayer.

Saint Patrick (unity)

Almighty God, Saint Patrick served You in Ireland because he had been kidnapped and shipped there as a slave. You brought endless good out of the evil committed against him, so I ask Saint Patrick to pray for the Irish people--those born in Ireland and those of Irish descent, and to pray for the unity between Protestants and Catholics. Lord, bring an end to the division and fighting. Turn hatred into love, war into peace, and prejudices into mutual understanding. Teach us to conquer the real enemy, the spirits of evil. Help us to rely on the victory of the Cross for reconciliation between peoples. Saint Patrick, pray for us. Amen.

A happy and blessed St. Patrick’s Day to you and all my Irish and Catholic friends on FR.

These Confessions are absolutely beautiful, as is the Breastplate of Patrick. Thank God the sainted man brought the Holy Faith to Ireland.

Erin Go Bragh!!

A verse for St. Patrick, which can be used with the hymn “By All Your Saints in Warfare”:

All praise for him whose mission
Was to the em’rald isle
Who preached the peace of Jesus
To tribes he’d once re-viled.
Like him who used the shamrock
To teach your mys-ter-y
Let us be ever faithful
To you, bless’d Trin—it-y.
