The Story of a Modern-Day Exorcist
TIME ^ | Monday, Mar. 16, 2009 | GILBERT CRUZ

Posted on 03/18/2009 8:48:56 PM PDT by Antioch

When he first heard about a Vatican-sponsored course on exorcism for priests, journalist Matt Baglio was intrigued by the idea of this ancient ritual taking place in the modern world. In his new book, The Rite, Baglio follows American priest Father Gary — sent to Rome to train as an exorcist — and his apprenticeship with Father Carmine. Baglio talked to TIME about belief, skeptical priests and the particulars of the exorcism ritual.

An interesting secular account of the rise in exorcisms in the modern Catholic Church.

I thought Time's placement of the link to follow in order to view photos of the Pope was a bit suspect (link is in parens). Whoever edited this story on the web site probably enjoyed a good chuckle over their "subtle" dig:

The course would bring in experts — experts in satanic cults, experts in criminology, they even had a psychiatrist come in to talk to the priests about the differences between the various mental illnesses that could be confused for demonic possession vs. what the church says is actually demonic possession. (See photos of Pope Benedict XVI.)

TRUE STORY - One of the strangest things I ever saw was at a church Sumner youth camp. I must of been around 14 or 15 at the time. Not Catholic, it was a camp of evangelical kids. Anyway one night at alter call a girl my age (the one I had a church camp crush on) knelt down with a few of her friends at the steps in front of the alter and all of a sudden she went ballistic, kicking, biting, screaming in a very strange voice, hitting and scratching at anyone who got near her. We in the pews were really freaking out. It was terrifying to say the least. The elders finally were able to hold her down and began praying, and asking the demon to come out. She finally did calm down and returned to normal.

Was it a demon? I don't know. But I tell you it scared the you know what out of me. I never did pursue that summer camp crush after that scene.

The course is for priests, not the exorcisms. Don’t split your clauses!

Ya know, I just commented about the opening sentence being about a “course in exorcisms for priests.” I edited my comments so as not to appear like I was thinking Time had done it on purpose, since that seemed unfair, and a little too prone to cry victim... but that in combination with what you found... Maybe Time doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt. They are a furiously God-hating organization which attacks Christianity every Easter with headlines like, “Ha, Ha, Loser Christians Your Stupid Holiday is Based on Something Archaeologists Disproved. And Besides, the Muslims are Way Cooler”

I take your meaning though. In this case, no sense in playing "fair". The other side is fighting down and dirty, and has no thoughts about playing "fair" with us. While we don't have to lower ourselves to their level, we can at least call a horse a horse!! So, in that "spirit", Time magazine wins the Kentucky Derby!!

Catholic priests have long been masters of exorcism. Most protestant ministers who have encountered demons will barely speak of it. I’m not a Catholic, but I have tremendous respect for the priests who perform actions related to spiritual warfare.

I didn’t read the article. Right now the media recognizes the Catholic Church as an enemy to its Satanic campaign, and thus impugns the Pope and all things Catholic. If the media hates them, I love them, plain and simple, although in truth, I’ve always thought highly of the Catholics.

Well, to be fair, most priests don’t seem to really want to talk about it either. I think a lot of them find it all a little embarassing, either because they don’t believe in that stuff or that it “sensationalizes” the faith.

... well, then there are sects where EVERYTHING is about “deliverance” from possession. Those are the real scary ones, because they are playing with things they know not of.

There was once a girl I liked who I was trying to bring back to the Catholic church. I went with her to her new “church” to see its appeal to her. I found out they had performed a deliverance on her, and they pretty much messed her up badly.

The irony was everything was “this is demonic; that’s demonic.” But the worship leader had everyone pray to the god of Obednego. Now, those of us whose bibles weren’t edited by Luther know who the god of Obednego is. It ain’t the Father-God Creator. See, Mischach, Shadrack and Obednego were really named Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. They were assigned the names of demon-gods by the Babylonians.

To make matters worse, he thought he would have fun with his mostly black congregations, and was joking, “Now, that’s the kind of god I could worship: Old, Bad N*gger!” (Get it: O-Bed-Nego?) “My god is one old, bad N*gger!”

These, of course, were King James-only types, and this joke stressed he was saying *O*bednigo. KJV uses *A*bednego. But then, that wasn’t explicitly demonic enough.

I quite agree with you. After I became a Christian, I began a tour of Sovereign Grace and KJV only churches, quite by accident. I was looking for churches that agreed with my prophetic viewpoint.

Spiritual warfare is a practice for the most highly discerned at a time of ultimate discernment. The connection to the Holy Ghost must be of special attenuation. It is not a common situation. We are not to see demons behind every door.
