As my non-Catholic father used to say, Be a Catholic or don't be a Catholic. But don't get into the Church and try to change it to suit yourself. He always got furious when people would try to change the doctrines of what he called the Katolische Church.

Kudos to your father! Reminds me of my Presbyterian grandmother, who showed more respect for the Pope than the self-described Catholics in my family.
