I wouldn't have a problem if the Pope preached the Gospel there...praying there is another issue. Imagine Moses praying before the Golden Calf.

I'm very happy to hear this!

It would have been extremely inappropriate for the Pope, in my opinion, to have prayed in a mosque...and it seems as though the Vatican agrees since they've now issued a statement saying he did not pray there. Symbolism matters. If Obama prayed in a mosque, we wouldn't say 'people can pray anywhere,' believe me!

...no, but then neither I or the Pope apparently pray to our God in houses of worship dedicated to other ‘gods.’

The Vatican didn’t issue a special statement. This is just another news story like the one you posted except this one was from Yahoo via AP. I can see why you were taken in though - it’s easy to be manipulated by the media.

So I’ll await your condemnation of the Apostle Paul for preaching and praying at the Temple of Artemis.

...well, it may not be a ‘special statement’ but I’ll regard it as an important clarification from a Vatican spokesman. Symbolism matters.

This is from the Catholic News Service:
“Visiting mosque, pope says believing in God means respecting others
By Cindy Wooden
Catholic News Service
AMMAN, Jordan (CNS) — To believe in God is to pray, to be merciful and compassionate, to witness to the truth and to uphold the dignity of every person, Pope Benedict XVI said after visiting a monumental new mosque in Amman.
Acknowledging that much of the history of Christian-Muslim relations has been marked by misunderstanding and tension, the pope said it is faith that calls members of both communities to respect each other and join together to promote the common good.

Of course, some will continue to damn the Pontiff rather than read the truth.

...oh I think you know the difference between preaching the Gospel to win converts, versus respectfully entering a temple of another religion, praying, and then leaving. I wouldn't fly the communist Chinese flag on my webpage even if I was in China, but that doesn't seem to bother you either. I guess we just have different understandings of symbolism. I think for the head of the Catholic church to pray in a house of worship dedicated to Allah would have been inappropriate, and I'm glad to see that the Vatican has corrected the record.

The whole story.
I choose not to live my life constrained by fear of what others may think of me; I live my life as God expects, and as best provides for my family. That others live to satisfy men is truly sad.

The Pope is just a man.Just as sinful as any other man or woman and condemned without the blood of Jesus.

A man he is, but also a symbol.

You got a deceptive headline and ran with it without double-checking. An easy mistake but please don’t try and weasel out by now saying the Vatican “corrected the record” because that simply isn’t true. Your UPI article omitted the full story - see - OPUSFR’s link or read mine. There are also lots more on the net and none of them say he “prayed” there except the one you chose to post.
Here’s lots of news stories about the Pope’s visit to the Mosque and not one of them said he prayed their...:

The “symbol” part is why he will walk out of the mosque alive.
