A lay Catholic organization founded in 2002 in the wake of the clerical abuse scandal is facing financial collapse. I think a lot of people were energized by the crisis and wanted to do something, and Voice of the Faithful was there at the right time, Philip Lawler, founder and editor of Catholic World News, told the Associated Press. Now, with the crisis having passed, the organization's agenda is not so popular.
The organization has used the current crisis in the Church as a springboard for presenting an agenda that is anti-Church and, ultimately, anti-Catholic, Archbishop John Myers of Newark wrote in 2002. Altering Church teaching on sexual morality and defiance of the apostolic authority that has guided the Church since its founding 2,000 years ago by Our Lord Jesus Christ have all found a place in the ranks of Voice of the Faithful.

From their mission statement, they are attempting to "3. Shape structural change within Church." This is intended to make a "democratic" Church which clearly violates the hierarchical structure which has always existed and is reemphasized in Vatican II Lumen Gentium. The chairman James Muller states in a National Catholic Reporter article on April 26, 2002, ÏWe have donation without representation, and we have to change that.Ó Also on a CNN interview dated April 29, 2002, the chairman desires cafeteria Catholicism: "... our goal is to provide a democracy for the laity, so that the laity can decide what they want and then counterbalance the absolute power, which we have now of the hierarchy." *snort*Yeah, me neither. Several Catholic friends were curious about VOTF when they first started holding meetings here in Central MA, just after the priest abuse scandal broke. They were drawn to them by their anger at the collective stupidity of the Bishops. I warned them what VOTF was about, because I KNEW it was just too convenient that they were there at JUST the right time, trying to foment dissatisfaction in ALL areas of the Church. They looked a little more closely at the group, and agreed with me.
