Actions have consequences.
Ironic that on the day when Lutherans Commemorate 18th Century Lutheran pioneer Pastor Henry Melchior Muhlenberg, more evidence emerges that Pr. Muhlenberg's dream for North American Lutheran unity ("one people, one book") is more elusive than ever.
The ELCA has had the wrong ecumenical priorities for almost all of its existence. Instead of pursuing "full communion" relationships with a myriad of other denominations, especially the Reformed, the top priorty should have been INTRALutheran unity; closely followed by greater ties with Rome and Constantinople.
Then the others--way down the line. Got it bass-ackwards.

I was talking with my district president yesterday, and he was just back from a meeting of the Council of Presidents in St. Louis. He stated that the LCMS has asked the ELCA NOT to enforce its policy on gay clergy in areas that affect any joint cooperation with the LCMS. Even though I'm opposed to working with the ELCA, the LCMS does have some humanitarian and military programs in which the ELCA participates. There is already a significant number of clergy and laity that would prefer no participation with the ELCA, and it the ELCA decides to ignore LCMS’s request, this will lead to the termination of all joint events.
