The problem I find with eschatology is that people presume to know the mind of God with regards to the scriptures. Some (like Hal Lindsey) try to foretell the future, even though fortune telling is forbidden in scripture.

I agree that trying to put exact dates to things tends to get a little extreme. However, we have been given prophesy in the OT that told us where the Messiah would come from, when He would come and what would happen to him. Why ignore the prophesies we've been given in the NT.

You very well may be correct that God may not be done with Israel and that it is His plan to bring them to repentance. I can't say one way or another that this is true.

What I can say that is clear in scripture is that there is only one flock of God and one Shepherd. God will save who He so choses and give them to that Shepherd. If that means that God will someday save all the people in the nation of Israel, then they will all become Christians and Israel will become a Christian nation. They will be grafted back onto the branch of Christ.

Amen, we really don't disagree on this.

In trying to understand the end times one thing that has become clear to me is we are not in the millennial reign and there will be a Tribulation. The timing of the Rapture pre, mid, or at the glorious appearing is something I'm not so sure about.

I served as elder for many year in a former church, so my training was my previous on-the-job experience.

Makes sense, if you are still in the same denomination anyway.

In the PCA once you are an Elder/Deacon, you are always one.

I missed a few days worth of posts, and yours was one I really wanted to answer though I see Topcat did a fine job explaining Presbyterian church governance and the election of elders by the congregation. It really is almost identical to our representative form of local, state and federal government as reflected by the individual church, the Presbytery and the General Assembly.

I came across an old post from Orthodox Presbyterian who once explained that Presbyterianism is "far closer to the Conciliar-Governance Model of the church as found in the Jerusalem Council of Acts 15 than the congregationalist anarchy of Baptist-Independency.” (OP never was one to tread lightly with his metaphors.)

So I figured I'll spend some time this weekend on Acts 15. 8~)
