11:11 is a psychological phenomena because of the way the mind looks for pattern. As numbers on their own, they are no more significant than 55:55 or 8675309.

You probably woke up many times and glanced at the clock, but because it is a number image with a pattern, it locks in the mind more than other times so you are more likely to remember that versus say, waking up at 12:15. After you noticed it the first time, you probably thought about it more than you realized, especially with all the internet stuff about it, so subconsciously, your mind is now looking for that pattern.
It is akin to buying a car, suddenly you see the same model every where. I recently bought my wife a new car, a model that is not very common (both from price and that the closest dealer is an hour away), yet on the way back to work from lunch, I saw three on the road. I rarely noticed it before. My mind looked for it and was more aware.

No, but 55:55 has major historical significances. It may be 55:55, or 55,55, or 5555, or other formats. At that, I bet now that you know to look for it, you may start seeing 5555 everywhere.

A friend of mine is quite sure that 11:11 is a "hello!" from beyond the grave sent by her Jewish mother.
Her mom had commented that she liked 11:11 because it reminds her of a picket fence. The idea that my friend might be, subconciously, watching for 11:11 as a way to feel close to her mother has not occurred to her, as she seems surprised and delighted each time it happens (which is frequently).
