“Many of our fathers, mine included (a Army Air Corps pilot), would have told you that the Japanese were savages with POWs”

POWs captured by the German Nazis had a much better chance of surviving than those captured by the Japanese Nazis.

“These weapons are so awful that perhaps remembering people’s stories will help us realize why it is important not to let crazy governments have access to them.”

How? By attacking them first? Does that meet the criteria for a just war?

Seems like those criteria require a country to sit on its hands and let its enemies build up arms indefinitely.

“Even when they raped or murdered innocent civilians?”

Oh, narses, that’s not worthy of you.

Rapes and murders by Americans in WWII were exceedingly few, and never an instrument of policy, as were the Rape of Nanking and the lesser-known Rape of Manila.

The minimum courtesy on THIS site is to ping those you talk about.

In that case, I expect you to get on the case of your fellow Catholics the next time it happens.

"Hastening an end to the war does not justify the massive killing of civilians."

“I believe that for Christians to draw the distinction between “kill” and “murder” is actually mincing words.”

There are no rational grounds to think that. The difference between killing, say, in a struggle against Evil, and murder, are greater than those between a mugger cutting with a switchblade and a surgeon cutting with a scalpel.

"Really? How does the killing of an innocent child ever become moral?"

Anyone innocent, for that matter.

U-2012>There are some popular "Christian" churches that teach that Jesus taught a different religion than YHvH.

There are also some popular churches which teach religion in the same fashion the Talmud teaches the Mishna, rather than simply letting the spoken Memra be used by God the Holy Spirit in the human spirit and mind of the believer in fellowship with God through faith in Christ, continually sanctifying the mind and spirit of the believer in fellowship with Him.

I agree with you, but I would go further.

Any man-made tradition which impugns the Holy Word of G-d
is not only wrong, but is blasphemous and those who teach
it are false shepherds and I'm sure that YHvH will hold them
accountable.

Thank God you’re not describing about the Catholic Church, which was founded by Christ, the second person of the Blessed Trinity and is guided and protected to this day by the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Blessed Trinity.

Is there one God ? or are there two or three ?

One God in Three Persons, the Holy Trinity.

you wrote: “I consider enemy civilian population centers as legitimate targets in war. “

By that logic a belligerent can define anyone they choose as an enemy and then kill them. I’m pretty certain the NAtional Socialist Party did that.

I feel very, very sorry for you.

Regarding Japanese surrender feelers. The historical record is filled with documented evidence of Japanese attempts to negotiate a surrender. Recall that the Japanese government was not monolithic, but rather filled with various factions. Also recall the attempted military coup the night the emporer decided to surrender.

Unconditional surrender was from Roosevelt and caught everyone, including the allies by surprise when he announced it at the Quebec Conference. Whether it was the right policy or not is a rich matter for debate, but it was a first in modern war.

Skates is hardly credible on this issue. Laughable is more like it.

"What do you think about the genocidal wars commanded by God in the Old Testament?"

I guess it could be like cutting out a cancer. Being God he would have known the future and the evil these people would have spread amongst his chosen. Something about His prophesy had to come about and them going against His people time and time again after being warned of the consequences they would face, they ran out of chances.

In the Torah, Yahweh asked the Israelites to kill once. He told Moses and Joshua to remove those poisoned by the Canaanite religion from the land. They were like Muhammad's Muslims: immoral, terrorizing, plundering, enslaving, and murdering. Allah, by contrast, gave Muslims hundreds of commands to kill and he especially hated Christians and Jews, ordering Muslims to fight them until they were “wiped out to the last.” This is fundamental Islam - the very core of Mohammad's message.

It wasn’t deliberate at all. Before EVERY major bombing raid, leaflets were dropped warning the population to evacuate. So anyone left was an accident, or “deliberate” on the part of the Japanese. Sorry, I have no mercy for such a society. They had chances to save “the children.”

This is the Religion Forum. I am interested in hearing a religiously-based defense of the deliberate killing of civilians in wartime, from a Christian perspective. One that would make Jesus proud to give full approbation to it.

I suggest you take that up with Christ himself as you look to the instructions given to the Israelites in regards to the capture of the Promised Land.
