The Greek bears that out. The word translated “perfect” is telelos which is usually an architectural term translated “whole, finished, complete”.

That is exactly what Jesus is saying. We are to be “complete” in love and in Him.

However the LDS use that verse (Matt 5:28) saying we can be completely perfect, overcome all sin, in THIS life. They also use it as a “proof” we can become Gods ourselves.

Finally, the LDS reject the idea that humans are sinful by nature, they say that we were BORN “children of God” and also that sin is just “missing the mark”. There is a lot of downplaying sin.

Their idea of perfection is following all of the “commandments” which are basically the rules/regs/rituals of the LDS church.

I was LDS for several years until by God’s grace He pulled me out of it.

If I were one of those who live by salvation by works, or a LDS I sure would hate to stand in front of God when I die, and him say to me :
" " Well, I did send my son to pay for it all and to fulfill all the law on your behalf. However, since you insisted on living your life " YOUR WAY " and " NOT MY ONLY WAY " then, I have no choice to judge you by the standard that you insisted to life by.
Hmmmm ? let's see now ?

lot's of " GOOD WORKS " and " KEEPING THE LAW "
and I will have to weight that in the balances with all the things you " THOUGHT " that you tried to cover with your law keeping and obedience.
However, unfortunately, it still does not hold up to my standard of justice , holiness, and righteousness,
because,
you missed a few ..... well ?

you missed a lot,
kind of like a huge wide gulf that no man can close the gap.
The of one most important things or thing you either missed, or rejected was my son's sacrifice on your behalf, and you didn't even have to pay for the free gift of salvation that I provided , all you had to do is believe, receive it with faith , and trust in me.
