Church Response to Haiti Earthquake [LDS Caucus]
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ^ | 13 January 2010

Posted on 01/13/2010 12:42:02 PM PST by TheDon

We express our sympathy and prayers on behalf of the citizens of Haiti following the recent devastating earthquake. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is immediately shipping humanitarian relief, including personal hygiene kits and supplies for newborns. Efforts are underway to determine further humanitarian response in coordination with government and disaster relief organizations. Donations for relief efforts can be made at http://give.lds.org/emergencyresponse.

All missionaries serving in the country are safe, and we continue efforts to account for Church members in the area.

“Efforts are underway to determine further humanitarian response in coordination with government and disaster relief organizations.”

There is a link to make donations to help provide humanitarian aid to the people of Haiti.

"Haitians piled bodies along the devastated streets of their capital Wednesday after a powerful earthquake flattened the president's palace, the cathedral, hospitals, schools, the main prison and whole neighborhoods. Officials feared thousands — perhaps more than 100,000 — may have perished but there was no firm count."

No doubt this will involve a world wide effort to help the people of Haiti. I'm sure Americans will be on the front lines of that effort.

I worked with two guys from Haiti. One of them said that Haiti should be abandoned and sunk into the ocean. The other one said that he missed Haiti because he has to work here. The first guy said the second was the reason Haiti should be sunk.

Thanks for the link — I just donated. I’d been thinking of donating through the LDS Church. I’m not a member, but have a lot more faith that the money will be used appropriately than with some of the other relief organizations (e.g. the Red Cross).

I really don’t think this is an appropriate time for that sort of comment.

Best wishes to the LDS Church in their relief efforts. I’m sure they will help many suffering people. I’m giving to North Carolina Baptist Men’s Relief (although I’m not Baptist) because one of our NC FReepers will be going to Haiti with their relief teams.

UPDATE: This is in addition to what's been posted. I'm sure this is just the beginning of efforts that will go on for a long time. It's a heartbreaking situation.

SALT LAKE CITY 13 January 2010
In the wake of the devastating earthquake in Haiti, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is mobilizing resources to address the most pressing needs of the people in the Caribbean nation. Images of collapsed buildings and devastated families tell the story of the widespread destruction.

Two planes, one departing from Denver as early as Thursday and another leaving from Miami later this week will each include over 80,000 pounds of food and emergency resources such as tents, tarps, water filtration bottles and medical supplies donated by the Church. Transportation is being provided by Airline Ambassadors and Food for the Poor will aid with distribution in Haiti.

“We are constantly assessing needs to determine how our resources can directly help the people of Haiti,” said Nate Leishman, manager of the Church’s humanitarian emergency response efforts. “We are fully committed to this ongoing process and doing our best to help wherever we can.”

These new shipments are in addition to emergency supplies being sent by truck from the Dominican Republic including personal hygiene kits and supplies for newborns announced early Wednesday by the Church.

“We express our sympathy and prayers on behalf of the citizens of Haiti following the recent devastating earthquake,” said Kim Farah, Church spokesperson.

All Latter-day Saint missionaries serving in the country are safe, and Church leaders continue efforts to account for Church members in the area.

Donations for relief efforts can be made at http://give.lds.org/emergencyresponse.

I read about this today on the lds.org news site. The Church is truly a work and a wonder. I remember when we had this huge service project of putting together hygiene kits. I am grateful that the Church is there to help and asking for nothing in return. It is glorious.

Yes. Please, please, please, EVERYONE should put whatever they can toward the Humanitarian fund this Sunday. As financial clerk, I hope to count many humanitarian donations this week.
