Pouring water on the head is a sign that God’s grace is descending on the person if that person is being claimed in the name of the Most Holy Trinity.
Symbolism does not deliver a person from their sinful condition and the wrath of God .. the personal choice of an individual does. My friend, that’s all I’, trying to say.

It is not the symbolism that saves but God’s grace. The cloud that followed the people of Israel across the wilderness was a symbol or sign of God’s presence. The water of baptism is a symbol of God’s love, like in that respect to the passing of the people through the waters of the Red Sea.
