Wuerl is early favorite for cardinal's hat

Although the Vatican's anticipated announcement naming a new contingent of U.S. archbishops to the College of Cardinals likely is months away, observers are already placing their bets on which men will get the coveted red hat.

The lingo of horse racing, with words like "handicapping" and "top runners," is being applied to two men: Washington Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl and Archbishop Raymond L. Burke, prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, the Vatican's highest court.

The number of American cardinals is 13 — about one-tenth of the College of Cardinals — which may work against more American candidates, Father Reese said.

"There are other parts of the world besides the United States, which is the problem Wuerl faces," he said. "Thirteen U.S. cardinals is an all-time high, and Burke has a job in the Vatican that has traditionally gone to a cardinal. I am rooting for Wuerl. But because Benedict is keeping the number to 120, Wuerl is not necessarily a shoo-in."

It will be Burke and Dolan.
Wuerl will never be elevated; D.C. has relatively few people, and the diplomatic shenanigans that see seems to require of its leaders relegates it to the back bench while Benedict is pope.

Go in as a Cardinal, come out as an Archbishop.

At these two easy-to-remember links, two documents vital to understanding Canon 915—Denial of Communion to obstinate public sinners.

If Wuerl gets a red hat while continuing in obstinate defiance of his obligation to deny Communion to pro-abortion politicians and activists, it will be another death blow to the Catholic Church in America. The moral corruption of Wuerl is legendary. His public moral cowardice is not legendary—it is unquestionable and scandalous.
